Untergriesheim is a village in Baden-Württemberg that has been a district of Bad Friedrichshall since 1975 .

geography

Untergriesheim is north of Bad Friedrichshall on the banks of the Jagst .

history

The oldest known written mention of Untergriesheim, as Greozisheim , goes back to the donation of an Eberwin to the Lorsch monastery and, according to a copy of the deed of donation in the Codex Laureshamensis , dates from April 26th, 767. The village was probably founded in Franconian times around the 5th Founded Century. The first mentioned place name Greozisheim suggests a founder named Greozo or Greocus. The two neighboring towns of Untergriesheim and Obergriesheim emerged from its foundation up to the high Middle Ages .

In the upper village of Untergriesheim (near the cemetery) there was once said to have been a Franconian manor, near this a church was built early on, which in the high Middle Ages became the mother church for Tiefenbach and Höchstberg (later also for Hagenbach and Heuchlingen). In 1136 the place came into the possession of the Comburg monastery , the church remained imperial church in the possession of the Lords of Weinsberg , from 1446 the Count Palatine of the Rhine . In 1532, the Bürger line of the Lords of Gemmingen acquired the place from the Comburg monastery.

In 1805 Untergriesheim became part of the Electorate of Württemberg . During the implementation of the administrative structure in the newly founded Kingdom of Württemberg , Untergriesheim was assigned to the Upper Office of Neckarsulm in 1806 . In 1840 today's church of St. Johannes Baptista, dedicated to John the Baptist , was rebuilt below the upper village. The previous medieval church at the cemetery was demolished in 1845. In 1860 the town received a council and school building, and the town's train station followed around 1870 with the construction of the railway.

In 1939 there were 474 inhabitants, at the end of 1945 there were 613. During the administrative reform during the Nazi era in Württemberg , Untergriesheim became part of the Heilbronn district in 1938. At the end of the Second World War, the place became part of the American zone of occupation and thus belonged to the newly founded state of Württemberg-Baden , which was merged into the current state of Baden-Württemberg in 1952. On January 1, 1975 Untergriesheim was incorporated into Bad Friedrichshall. Today the place has about 1400 inhabitants and a modest infrastructure, so mainly commuters from the surrounding places and communities live here .

Due to the scenic location in the Jagsttal, the place has a high recreational value. The Kocher-Jagst cycle path leads past Untergriesheim, there is a swimming area and various supraregional tent camps take place here.

coat of arms

The symbol of the fishing rod has been found on municipal seals since 1912. In 1938, with a view to a possible merger with Obergriesheim and Höchstberg , the archives management proposed a joint coat of arms showing a fishing rod and a continuous black Teutonic order cross. In 1959, after the failure of the merger, Obergriesheim and Tiefenbach adopted their own coats of arms, Untergriesheim retained the coat of arms from 1938 with minor changes (the fishing rod was previously shown in black on silver).

Attractions

  • The Catholic Church of St. Johannes Baptista was built in 1839/40 in the chancellery style , an intermediate form of classicism and neo-Romanesque. The simply furnished church has replaced an older building located in the cemetery. In front of the church is the Johannesbrunnen from 1993.
  • Next to the church is the former schoolhouse from 1892, which was raised in 1912 and expanded with an attached teacher's apartment.
  • The old town hall and school building in the center of the town was built in 1860.
  • Historical epitaphs on the cemetery wall, including that of Burkhard von Wittstatt, remind us of the old church that is no longer there today. The lords of Wittstatt were local nobility and owners of Hagenbach until 1506.
  • Other historically significant objects in Untergriesheim include a medieval half-timbered house at Oberen Dorfstraße 15, the rectory from the 17th century, a wayside shrine from the late 18th century, a sandstone statue of the Virgin Mary donated in 1865 and the war memorial.

traffic

Untergriesheim is the stopping point of the Lower Jagst Valley Railway, built between 1866 and 1869 , a section of the railway line from Stuttgart to Würzburg, now known as the Frankenbahn . Regional trains stop every hour to Osterburken and Heilbronn , some of which are linked to Stuttgart and Ulm .
