The Bad Wimpfen station is the station of Baden-Württemberg spa town of Bad Wimpfen am Neckar . It is located at 33.8 km on the Neckargemünd – Bad Friedrichshall line and belongs to category 6 of DB Station & Service . The station building is a listed building .

Bad Wimpfen train station is located in the main town of the spa town, Wimpfen am Berg , on the slope above the Neckar, approx. 30 m lower than the old town. Important sights in the old town, such as the Red Tower , are within walking distance. Directly to the east of the train station there is a railway bridge to cross Landesstraße 530, which in Bad Wimpfen is identical to Carl-Ulrich-Straße. The address of the train station is Carl-Ulrich-Straße 1 . There is a forecourt to the south of the station , where the stops for the regional bus routes and the Bad Wimpfen citizen bus are also located. The Neckar flows below the northern side of the station.

Bad Wimpfen is located in tariff zone 41 of Heilbronn's local transport , but due to transitional regulations it can also be reached in some cases with tickets from the Rhein-Neckar transport association.

Opening of the train station

In the 1860s , the railway line from Heidelberg via Neckargemünd , Meckesheim and Sinsheim to Bad Friedrichshall was gradually built. The Wimpfen train station was opened together with the Bad Rappenau - Jagstfeld section (today: Bad Friedrichshall Hbf ) by the Grand Ducal Baden State Railways on August 5, 1869. A bridge had to be built between the Bad Wimpfen and Jagstfeld stations to cross the Neckar. As a result, the health resort, which had existed since 1817, experienced a great boost, which led to an economic boom in the city.

Further development

In the 1914 timetable, 16 passenger trains served the station every day, ie eight in each direction. The summer timetable for 1939 lists 14 passenger trains and one stop of an express train for the station, while D trains passed through the station without stopping. The hostilities of the Second World War forced a restriction of rail traffic. Two years later, 12 passenger trains still stopped in Bad Wimpfen. In 1943 and 1944, just eight passenger trains stopped at the station on weekdays.

In 1945 the double-track bridge in the station was blown up. It was then only rebuilt on a single track and the second main track was shortened accordingly.

As early as 1944, the Neckar Bridge between Bad Wimpfen and Bad Friedrichshall-Jagstfeld was damaged by an air raid, but it was used until it was blown up in January 1945. From October 5, 1947, trains ran from Bad Wimpfen to a provisional stop at Bad Wimpfen Neckarbrücke , where passengers were then taken by ferry to the other bank of the Neckar to Bad Friedrichshall-Jagstfeld station. From 1952 the Neckarbrücke was navigable again and the makeshift solution including the Bad Wimpfen Neckarbrücke stop was abandoned.

On March 5, 1990, the previously three-track class 3 station was converted to a single-track stop by dismantling the freight and crossing tracks. Until 1992, tickets were sold in the reception building by the spa administration.

Expansion of the station and integration into the Heilbronn city railway

From March 2008 to December 2009 the Elsenz Valley Railway and thus also the Bad Wimpfen station was expanded and electrified. On January 7, 2014, construction work began on the extension of the Heilbronn Stadtbahn to the north. As part of the expansion of the Heilbronn tram connection north , Bad Wimpfen station was expanded into a double-track crossing station and the bridge over the L 530 was rebuilt as a double-track bridge. The eight new signals were set up using a helicopter . This event was also followed by the local population. From April 30, 2015, after the construction work was completed, light rail vehicles could reach Bad Wimpfen train station.

During these two construction measures, the line around Bad Wimpfen was closed, rail replacement traffic was set up and trains were diverted via Eberbach and the Neckar Valley Railway .

Reception building

The stately reception building of the Wimpfen train station is a three-storey, massive building made of yellowish sandstone in the neo-Gothic style with numerous decorative shapes such as tracery windows on the ground floor and angled building with a stepped gable . The building is asymmetrical and has a bay window on the east side. The architectural style, reminiscent of churches , should consciously refer to the buildings in the old town. This took into account a requirement of the Baden Ministry of the Interior that the train stations should blend in well with the cityscape or landscape . The building was erected by the Baden district building authority in Heidelberg. On the ground floor there was a reception hall with an adjoining ticket hall, the train station restaurant with a sophisticated kitchen and two service rooms. On the upper floor there were two service apartments for railway employees, including the station master. The attic was where the attic and some chambers were. The toilets were in an outbuilding of the station. The Deutsche Bundesbahn rebuilt the station between 1956 and 1959 and also changed the historical floor plan . The original appearance - like parts of the historical building fabric - was changed. In 1982 the tracery parapet on the south side of the building was removed due to the risk of falling. However, following requests from the State Monuments Office in Baden-Württemberg , it could be reconstructed. The manned ticket office in the train station was open until 1992 before it was closed due to a lack of profitability . The Bad Wimpfens spa administration acquired the building and commissioned an architects' office from Stuttgart to submit plans for the renovation of the train station in accordance with historical monuments. The original floor plan and the original appearance were largely restored. This enabled hidden design elements to be exposed again. A restaurant and a city ​​information center moved into the building. After completion of the renovation work, the station was inaugurated on April 28, 1995 by the then Transport Minister of the State of Baden-Württemberg , Hermann Schaufler . Bad Wimpfen train station is the only station in southern Germany built in neo-Gothic style . The building is a cultural monument and protected according to § 2 DSchG .

Platforms

It is preferred to use track 1, track 2 is in use at the crossings with counter trains that take place frequently. Both platforms are connected by a passenger crossing that crosses the railroad tracks at the same height .

Bad Wimpfen is located on the Elsenz Valley Railway from Heilbronn via Sinsheim to Heidelberg . Since the expansion in 2015, line RE 2 from DB Regio (since December 2019 RE 10b from Abellio BW) between Mannheim, Heidelberg, Sinsheim and Heilbronn and line S 42 of the Heilbronn urban railway between Sinsheim, Bad Rappenau, Bad Wimpfen and Bad Friedrichshall have been operating here , Neckarsulm and Heilbronn. Until the beginning of January 2014, regional trains on the RB 74 line ran via Bad Wimpfen instead of the S 42 light rail line. These served every hour between Sinsheim, Bad Rappenau, Bad Wimpfen and Bad Friedrichshall and some continued to Heilbronn. Class 425 electric multiple units were used.

Abellio Rail Baden-Württemberg GmbH has been serving the station in Bad Wimpfen since December 2019.

Freight transport

The Solvay chemical plant in Bad Wimpfen is regularly served from Heilbronn . The siding branches off to the right of the line in front of the station and is secured by a protective switch . Around 20% of the total of almost 500,000 t of cargo handled there annually is transported by rail.

Bus connection at the train station

From the Bad Wimpfen, Bahnhof stop , there are various regional bus routes that connect the smaller surrounding towns with the train station. Lines 683 and 684 are operated by the Hofmann bus company from Bad Rappenau, and line 694 by DB Regiobus Stuttgart .
