Street side of the Karlsruhe-Durlach train station (May 2007)

The Karlsruhe-Durlach station is the second largest station in the Baden city of Karlsruhe after the main station . In addition to regional trains, it is also served by individual long-distance trains.

history

old trainstation

The old Durlach train station was opened in 1843 in the then still independent community of Durlach . The old station was on today's Ernst-Friedrich-Strasse / Pforzheimer Strasse, southeast of today's Durlach station.

After the opening of the new Durlach train station in 1911, the old one lost its importance and was finally closed in 1913. Then in the south of the station there was still the freight station , which was operated until 1990 , the area of which was built over in 2000. The old station was opened on the Baden-Kurpfalz-Bahn , which was first created in 1600 mm wide gauge . The Baden State Railroad was converted to standard gauge in 1854 while operations continued. In 1859 the line to Mühlacker was opened.

New train station

The new Durlach train station was opened on December 9, 1911, with the result that the route to Mühlacker was given a slightly different route. The main purpose of relocating the station was to remove the bottleneck between Durlach and Karlsruhe main station , as the trains from Mühlacker first had to use the tracks of the Baden main line .

In 1992, a double-track light rail line was laid north-west of the station , which branches off from Durlacher Allee and, after crossing the Baden-Kurpfalz Railway, merges into the Karlsruhe – Mühlacker railway line. Parallel to the train station there is a stop of the Albtal-Verkehrs-Gesellschaft mbH with two side platforms (tracks 11 and 12), where the tram lines S4 and S5 stop today, while the tram lines S31 and S32 stop in the DB section of the station. All platforms are connected by an underpass .

Between 2003 and 2005, the platforms in the DB section of the Durlach train station were completely renovated for 4.5 million euros, so that barrier-free access was also made possible by the S-Bahn RheinNeckar and Albtal-Verkehrs-Gesellschaft mbH. The platform edges of the station were increased in one half to 76 cm (suitable for the RheinNeckar S-Bahn) and in the other half to 55 cm (suitable for the Karlsruhe Stadtbahn). The platforms at the tram stop kept their previous height of 38 cm, as they were not part of the S-Bahn RheinNeckar project.

At the beginning of April 2004 a DB ServiceStore was opened in the reception building. The entire renovation of the reception building cost the DB around € 290,000.
