history

S4 to Karlsruhe at the entrance

The Bretten station was opened on October 1, 1853 as part of the construction of the Württemberg Westbahn Stuttgart - Mühlacker - Bretten - Bruchsal . When the Kraichgau Railway Karlsruhe - Heilbronn was opened at the end of the 1870s , it became a railway junction and at the same time moved from the city center (the old station building was retained) to its current location west of the city center to the area of the then still independent municipality of Rinklingen .

With the electrification of the Westbahn in the 1950s, the catenary also reached Bretten station. When light rail operations to Bretten- Gölshausen opened on the Kraichgau Railway on September 25, 1992 , the Kraichgau Railway was also electrified. This first two-system light rail line received the line designation "B". In May 1994 the S9 Bruchsal – Bretten light rail line was opened, and in 1999 it was extended to Mühlacker. Also in 1994, line “B” was renamed “S4”.

In summer 2000 the station was completely modernized. Among other things, the platforms were raised, the waiting halls enlarged and a toilet set up. From 2002 to 2004 there were continuous connections on the Murg Valley Railway to Freudenstadt with the opening of the Stadtbahn , which was discontinued at the end of 2004 due to the high susceptibility to delays. Regional Express trains also run from Heidelberg to Stuttgart, which stop in Bretten, as does the so-called “ Kraichgau Sprinter ”, which connects Heilbronn with Karlsruhe twice a day with just a few stops.

There is a bus station at the station forecourt , where bus lines 141, 144, 146, 700 and 733 stop and open up Bretten and its immediate surroundings.
