Cappel is a village on the Hohenlohe plain that has belonged to Öhringen in the Hohenlohe district in Baden-Württemberg since 1975 . Today the place has 1159 inhabitants.
geography
Cappel is about two kilometers east of Öhringen at an altitude of 226 m above sea level. NN up to 287 m above sea level NN on both sides of the confluence of the Epbach in the Ohrn at their west bend. The old hamlet of Hornberg in the other side of the Ohrnaue belongs to Cappel and has expanded up the hill of the Hornberg in a new development area. There seem to have been two more settlements that have long since disappeared in the area .

history
Cappel was first mentioned as Cappelen in 1339 , but the place is likely to be two to three centuries older. The eponymous chapel no longer exists and its location is not known. The hamlet of Hornberg was first mentioned in 1366. On the Hornberg, southwest of the Ohrn, there was a medieval castle that no longer exists. The hamlet developed from the farm yard of this castle, which was abandoned early on. The knightly noble von Hornberg family sold the hamlet to Hohenlohe in 1420. Cappel came with the Vogtei Öhringen also under the rule of Hohenlohe . When the inheritance was divided in 1553/55, it fell to the Hohenlohe-Neuenstein line, the hamlet of Hornberg to Hohenlohe-Waldenburg. Hornberg fell to Hohenlohe-Bartenstein (Pfedelbach Office) in 1728. It stayed that way until 1819, after the end of Hohenlohe's rule. In 1819 the two places were merged into a mayor's office and a uniform marking was created. The municipality of Cappel-Hornberg was initially headed by a mayor and later by a mayor.
The municipality of Cappel was to be incorporated into Öhringen as early as 1939, the agreement and the consent of Reich Governor Wilhelm Murr had already been made. However, the outbreak of World War II prevented integration. After the war, the mayor of Öhringen, Laidig, took up the subject again at a town hall meeting in 1954 and - unsuccessfully - proposed incorporation. A memorandum from the city of Öhringen from 1966 was also unsuccessful. It was not until January 1, 1975 that Cappel was incorporated into Öhringen.
The Baden-Württemberg State Horticultural Show will take place in 2016 in Öhringen. A large part of the garden display areas will be laid out on the Cappeler mark.
In 1672 there was a customs post and an inheritance tavern in Cappel. Around 1700 there were around 100 inhabitants in Cappel, in 1800 the place had 270 inhabitants.

Religions
Cappel never formed an independent parish, but belonged to Öhringen Abbey from the start. Today the Protestant Christians belong to the Protestant parish of Öhringen, the Catholic to St. Joseph Öhringen. Until 1945 the place was almost exclusively Protestant. Since 1927, Cappel and Eckartsweiler have shared a cemetery on the border between the two places.
Buildings and facilities
The Roman Limes ran over the local marker, which is reminiscent of a memorial stone. The Hofgut is located in Cappel, a palace that was built together with a park in 1736 by Count Johann Friedrich I as a small orangery palace. The originally fully glazed south side was replaced after 1800 by today's classicist front with arched windows. In the 19th century, the Princely House sold the palace, park and associated property; afterwards additional commercial and residential buildings were built. The farm estate with park and farm buildings, as well as the agricultural areas of the Ohrnaue upstream to the south, are sub-areas of the State Horticultural Show 2016. In the course of the preparations, buildings and facilities are being given a representative upgrade.
In place of the sheep house from 1747, a parish hall was built in the center of Cappel in 1950/1951. It housed three apartments, the offices of the town hall, a post room, the communal laundry room, a mang room and the fire department equipment room . Since the incorporation, the house served as the seat of the administrative office. The fire brigade is housed in the building opposite (former slaughterhouse).
Elementary school (1963), kindergarten (1973), and cemetery as well as a village community room are other public facilities in Cappel.

economy
Until 1735 there was a princely brewery in Cappel, south of today's thoroughfare. The brewery went into private ownership and new brewery facilities were built north of the thoroughfare. After fires in 1885 and 1936, they were rebuilt twice. The Hohenloher Löwenbräu Cappel (HLBC) was well known in the region. In 1982 the owner handed over his business to the Stuttgarter Hofbräu brewery , which soon stopped. In 1986 the facilities were demolished (with the exception of the stately brewery restaurant) and a food market was built.
The number of farms has decreased significantly in recent years. There were two sawmills in Cappel. to Eppach and Ohrn. In operation until before the war. Both mills were shut down. The sawmill on the Ohrn became a timber company. A bank branch of the Raiffeisenbank Bretzfeld-Neuenstein and several craft and service companies are located in Cappel. Due to the suburban location to Öhringen, several trading companies have settled.
traffic
Cappel is on the Crailsheim – Heilbronn railway line , on the northern edge of the settlement is the final stop of the S4 light rail line from Heilbronn.
The state road L 1036, which connects the regional centers of Heilbronn and Schwäbisch Hall, runs right through Cappel. District roads from the north and south flow into this in the center of the village. North of the village, the A 6 Heilbronn – Nürnberg touches its district, the next junctions are at Öhringen in the west and at Neuenstein in the northeast, on the road about three and a half and six kilometers away.
Several touristic designated bike paths lead through Cappel.
Association
Cappel has a choir, a riding and driving club and a village community club with several subgroups. The Cappler fire brigade is a division of the Öhringen volunteer fire brigade. The clubs organize several festivals and celebrations throughout the year.
