The broad-leaved hook lily or flooding hook lily ( Crinum natans ; from Latin natans "floating") is a plant from the genus hook lilies ( Crinum ) in the amaryllis family (Amaryllidaceae). This aquatic plant thrives in West Africa .

Vegetative characteristics

The broad-leaved hook lily grows as a perennial herbaceous plant . As a storage organ , it forms an onion with a diameter of up to 4.5 centimeters. A vegetative propagation takes place via brood bulbs. The foliage leaves are simple, dark green, tough and leathery . With a length of up to 140 centimeters and a width of 2 to 5 centimeters, they are ribbon-shaped and strongly wavy.

Generative characteristics

The inflorescence shafts are up to 75 centimeters high. The inflorescence contains up to six flowers that open over water. The fragrant, hermaphrodite flowers are threefold. The six bracts are 5 to 9 inches long and 0.9 to 1.6 inches wide. The stylus is longer than the six stamens. The dark green, shiny fruits are spherical with a diameter of about 2 centimeters. The seeds are up to 1.7 inches long.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22.

Occurrence

The distribution area of Crinum natans extends in South West Africa from Guinea to Cameroon and south to the Congo . It thrives in streams and rivers in the rainforest on muddy, gravelly or rocky ground . The locations are shady to full sun.

The first description of Crinum natans was in 1898 by John Gilbert Baker in Flora of Tropical Africa , Volume 7, p. 396.

use

In Nigeria, the leaves and onions of Crinum natans are used against mental illnesses . The onions contain the alkaloid crinatin .

The broad-leaved hook lily is known as a specimen plant in the aquarium hobby . It grows quite slowly, needs a nutrient-rich substrate and prefers locations with some current.
