The Magdeburg tram runs on an approximately 64-kilometer route network in the Saxony-Anhalt state capital Magdeburg . In mid-2014, 100 trams (including 13 sidecars) were running on nine lines . The Magdeburg tram has been operated by Magdeburger Verkehrsbetriebe GmbH since 1999 .

History until 1989

Tram traffic was started in 1877 with a horse-drawn tram from the Magdeburg Horse Railway Company . In 1886 the first steam line of the Magdeburg Trambahn-Actien-Gesellschaft followed . The two companies merged in 1887 under the name Magdeburger Straßen-Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft MSEG . In the following years the route network was further expanded. On July 18, 1899, electrical operation began on the Olvenstedter Strasse - Alter Markt - Großer Werder route. Just a year and a half later, the entire network of horse-drawn trams was electrified. During this period, the network was also expanded by building a ring line around the old town.

At the end of the Second World War , the main workshop was destroyed by bombing in 1945 and the network and vehicles were badly damaged. The first new vehicles went into operation from 1949/51. Conductorless operation was introduced in the 1960s. Until the introduction of punching machines in 1976, tickets were obtained from payment boxes . In 1969 the first Tatra trams were presented. In addition, some new lines were put into operation. In 1975 to the new building area Neustädter See, 1979 to the industrial area Rothensee and 1984 to the new building area Neu-Olvenstedt.

Development since 1990

The tram routes to Lerchenwuhne (now IKEA) were opened in 1991, between Südring and Westring in 1992 and in 2004 on Europaring and Listemannstrasse. The renovation of the route on the North Bridge in 1998 was like rebuilding. This contrasts with the discontinuation of the route to Hermann-Gieseler-Halle due to the opening of the Westring route and in Walter-Rathenau-Strasse due to the opening of the route in Listemannstrasse.

By December 2012 Leipziger Strasse was expanded and the Leipziger Chaussee - Reform route via the Bördepark shopping center was reopened.

In August 2018, the route through Wiener Straße was released for use.

Line network restructuring 2015

On May 28, 2015, the Magdeburger Verkehrsbetriebe announced that there will be a major restructuring of the route network on July 13, 2015. This became necessary due to the construction of the city tunnel at Damaschkeplatz, as a result of which this section of the route can only be used as a single track in both directions.

The nocturnal tram service, however, will be discontinued, instead there is a new night bus network NACHTAKTIV , consisting of the bus lines N1 to N8 and the dial-a-ride bus line N9, whereby it should be noted that the daytime traffic has been extended until 23:00.

Night traffic

In the course of the reorganization of the line network on July 13, 2015, the nightly line offer was completely converted to bus transport. The lines 91-96, which covered the routes of the daily lines, were run up to there in the evening connecting traffic.

Other traffic

At major sporting events, the amplifier line 15 is used, which usually runs between the Alter Markt and the arenas. Line 15 also travels to the most populous parts of the city, for example Olvenstedt, Sudenburg, Reform.

On special occasions, the historic tram lines 77 run between the museum depot Sudenburg and the Herrenkrug or the main workshop, as well as line 99 between Sudenburg and Neustadt station. Occasionally, historic vehicles are also signposted as line 22.

Vehicles in regular service

The articulated multiple unit ( NGT8D ) carries the main load of the tram traffic . Since the last delivery at the end of 2012, there are 83 of these with the company numbers 1301 to 1383. The vehicles 1301 to 1325 were manufactured by Waggonbau Dessau . The vehicles from road number 1326 were built by Waggonbau Bautzen and subsequently by ALSTOM LHB GmbH . In 2011 the train combination of NGT8D and modernized Tatra sidecar B6A2 began, of which 11 trains are now in use. The Tatra sidecars were acquired, repainted and modernized by the Berlin transport company. They mainly run on line 9 and replace the large Tatra trains.

Although the Tatra Farewell was officially celebrated on January 27, 2013 , partially modernized vehicles of the type T6A2 and B6A2 are still in use , mainly on lines 2, 6, 9 and 10. For this purpose, four motor coaches and two trailer cars are available as operating reserves which were coupled to form three two-car trains. All other vehicles of this type were scrapped by spring 2014 due to flood damage.

Until 2012, Tatra T4 DM trams and the associated B4DM sidecar were still in service on working days . The Tatra vehicles had been in operation in Magdeburg since 1969 and have been modernized and reconstructed several times since then. The model numbers of modernized vehicles by an additional M supplemented. 19 T4D railcars and 8 B4D sidecars were transferred to the Romanian city of Oradea in August 2013 .

In 2020 the Magdeburger Verkehrsbetriebe bought 8 Tatra cars of the type KT4DM from Berlin to ease the vehicle bottleneck and to be able to set up a 10-minute cycle on line 10 to Rothensee again.

Work car

Four type T4DM railcars (728, 729, 1254, 1274II) have remained in Magdeburg as winter service railcars and complement the fleet of work cars. The railcars 728 and 729 each have a sliding plate to clear the tracks from snow. In 2018 the two railcars 1244 and 1245 were scrapped because they were superfluous and in poor condition.

In 2017, MVB put a new driving school car (701) and a rail grinding train (703 + 704) into operation. These vehicles are modernized T6A2s, which were originally used by passengers in Berlin and were rebuilt for use in Magdeburg. The driving school vehicle was converted by MVB itself in just under two years. The car received a new driver's workstation, which is modeled on those of the NGTs. The rail grinding train consists of two wagons that are coupled rear-to-rear for use in order to be more effective. The train also has a rail head lubrication system designed to minimize the squeaking between the wheel and the rail. The 703 car also has a catenary observation station equipped with a camera, with which the overhead line can be checked. The conversion was carried out by the Fahrzeugwerke Miraustraße GmbH in Hennigsdorf from March 2015 to January 2017. The old driving school car of the type T4D (774) and the rail grinding car of the type T4D (708) will initially remain in the MVB's portfolio.

In addition, MVB owns a type T57 work car from Waggonbau Gotha from 1960 with the company number 702, which is located in the main workshop, and three auxiliary equipment wagons of the type T4D with the company numbers 706, 713 and 756.

A self-made goods transport truck is available for internal transport between the workshops. It bears the road number 765.

Historic wagons

In addition, there are some historic tram cars in the Sudenburg museum depot.

Depots

The vehicles are parked and serviced in two depots. The north depot is on the route to Lake Barleber and was opened in 1974. The last Tatra cars and around 50 NGT8Ds are maintained here. During the floods in 2013 , the northern depot was completely flooded and has only been operated provisionally since then. A thorough renovation including elevation of the site is planned by 2020.

The depot southeast in Westerhüsen was put into operation in 1921 by the Magdeburg suburban railway company. Several modernizations and expansions were carried out, most recently in 2001. About 35 NGT are based here.

There is also a main tram workshop in Brückfeld (opened in 1899). With the expansion or new construction of the northern depot, the main workshop at the current location is to be given up.

With the conversion to electrical operation in 1899/1900, the yards of the steam train opposite the main workshop and the horse-drawn tram in the old new town disappeared. The former horse tram depots in Buckau and the New Neustadt remained in operation until the 1970s. The courtyard on Westring was closed in 2001.

Museum depot Sudenburg

Museum depot Sudenburg

The depot in Sudenburg is now used for the historic trams, their regular exhibitions and trips. It was in operation from 1877 to 1991. On August 29, 2016, a short-term line operation was started again. After a water pipeline accident in Halberstädter Strasse, just before Leipziger Strasse, the tram network was divided and the historic trams and buses took over an emergency service for some western parts of the city.

The association for historical local transport and trams at MVB e. V. (IGNah) looks after the historical vehicle collection in the Sudenburg museum depot on behalf of the Magdeburger Verkehrsbetriebe . The depot is located directly at the Ambrosiusplatz stop .

Future network development: Line network 2020+

Work is currently underway to expand the tram network until 2021. It is planned to use a second north-south connection to reach almost all of the larger parts of the city by train. In addition, the redesign of Damaschkeplatz and Kölner Platz directly at the main station is planned. A completely new pedestrian / tram situation is to be created here, with motorized individual traffic going into a tunnel structure directly under the tram and long-distance and local trains going directly above it.

According to the Magdeburger Verkehrsbetriebe, the expansion plan is as follows:
