Design and history

The rectangular square was planned as part of the re-establishment of the Sudenburg, which began in 1812. It was projected as the center of the orthogonally planned street system and built in 1813/14 as the market square of Sudenburg. The square is dominated by the neo-Gothic St. Ambrose Church, which stands almost in the middle. The first church was consecrated there in 1822. The current church was built between 1875 and 1877. In front of the church there were markets, especially cattle and horse markets. Today the Sudenburg Christmas market is held here every year .

Today's rebuilding of the square comes from different construction phases. The older, still existing buildings were partly built in the first half of the 19th century and are one to two storeys high and covered with crooked or saddle roofs. The more recent development dates from the Wilhelminian era and consists of four-story residential and commercial buildings.

There is a stumbling block for Elisabeth Rauch (1875–1942) in front of the Ambrosius Church.

In the local register of monuments , the site is listed as a monument area under registration number 094 81915 .

The square is one of the few historical squares in the city that have largely been preserved in their original form. It is significant in terms of town planning and regional history, as it is on the one hand a testimony to the Napoleonic era and on the other hand a document of the Wilhelminian development as an industrial city.
