Architecture and history

The four-storey plastered building was built in 1888 in the neo-renaissance style . Before that, there was a single-storey house belonging to the merchant and master saddler Ferdinand Ungnade . The client of the new building was also in disgrace.

The facade of the representatively designed building is rusticated on the ground floor and provided with arcades with round arches and basket arches . On the third floor and the mezzanine floor , the window openings are provided with monumental -looking overhanging arches that rest on half-columns. The corner situation is emphasized by a polygonal corner projections.

A shop was built on the ground floor. The first user was a jam dealer. In May 1907, the businessman Georg Becker opened a trading shop for conveyors and transport systems in the house. He later founded a machine factory and gave up the shop. This was followed by a consumption establishment belonging to the Krupp-Gruson factory. Even after the Second World War , business continued to use consumption . After 1990 the use was then given up due to the increasing competition from wholesale markets. A real estate agent's office followed. Currently (as of 2017) there is a pizza delivery service in the shop.

In the local register of monuments , the residential and commercial building is listed as a monument under registration number 094 81989 . Presumably by mistake, the house is also listed at Halberstädter Straße 142 with registration number 094 76877.

Due to its prominent location, the building is considered to be formative and therefore significant in terms of urban planning for Ambrosiusplatz and Halberstädter Straße. It is also used as an example of a sophisticated residential and commercial building from the early days .
