The tram Zerbst was a 2.3-kilometer meter-gauge horse tram in Anhalt town Zerbst . The tram was in operation from 1891 to 1928 and was then replaced by omnibuses . The responsible transport company was called Zerbster Straßenbahn- und Betriebsgesellschaft , which was later also responsible for omnibus traffic and operated under the name Zerbster Kraftverkehrsgesellschaft from 1936 .

history

The horse-drawn tram, which opened on November 2, 1891, connected the Zerbst train station with the city center; the city-side end point was the market. The railway was one of the smallest tram companies in the world and was initially operated with just two cars, two horses and two drivers. On August 1, 1928, the Zerbst tram ceased operations as the third last horse tram in Germany. Only the Stadthagen tram (until 1930) and the Spiekerooger Inselbahn (horse-operated until 1949) ran longer .

Relics

Rails at the train station

From the 2.2 km long track system at that time, the rails of the horse-drawn tram are still on Zerbster Markt along Leopoldstrasse. Together with the remains of the track of the Döbeln tram that still exists today , these remains are among the oldest surviving relics of a German tram. Another piece of track is located in the forecourt of Zerbst train station.

They are under monument protection and were only recently paved in the course of the renovation of the market.

Interesting

A song is known among citizens of the city of Zerbst and the surrounding area, which contains a stanza that deals with the Zerbst tram (horse-drawn tram):

Chorus:

"Because we are the Zerbst, hi hi.
Every child knows that, Hello everyone.
We're uprooting trees, hello,
where there aren't any. "

Verse:

“It's cozy in Zerbst, there is
a horse- drawn tram, one horse doesn't pull, the other is lame.
The driver is hunched, the wheels are crooked,
and every five minutes the cart tips over. "
