The Bernburg tram served inner-city traffic from 1897 to 1921 in the former royal seat on the Saale, which in 1908 was inhabited by 35,000 citizens.

The license was owned by the Tram and Electricity Works Bernburg in Bernburg (Saale) , founded on June 16, 1896 , in which the Deutsche Continental Gasgesellschaft in Dessau was involved.

It was able to open on April 1, 1897, with nine railcars on a 3.3-kilometer single-track line that was laid out in meter gauge. It led from the train station across the Saale to the market square, where a 500 meter long service line branched off to the depot and on to the Waldauer bridge beyond the valley town.

The traffic was stopped on January 17, 1917, because the copper overhead line was removed as a material essential to the war effort. After the end of the First World War , replacements were obtained and operations were resumed on March 8, 1920. On April 19, 1921, the poor economic situation forced it to finally shut down, after which the railway facilities were dismantled.
