The Gottenheim railway station is the station of the Baden-Württemberg town of Gottenheim in Breisgau . Today the Gottenheim station is next to the two end points the most important station of the Breisacher Bahn Freiburg –Gottenheim– Breisach as well as the starting point of the Kaiserstuhlbahn to Bahlingen - Riegel Ort.

history

As part of a planned European east-west connection, Gottenheim station was completed as a station on the Freiburg - Breisach line on September 14, 1871. After the construction of the railway bridge over the Rhine near Breisach in 1878, the route was continued to Colmar in Alsace .

On December 15, 1884, the private Gottenheim - Riegel - Endingen line of the Kaiserstuhlbahn officially went into operation. This made Gottenheim a branch station . A year later (1895) the section Endingen - Breisach was completed. The builder was the Baden Railway Consortium consisting of the Bank for Trade and Industry, Rheinischer Kreditbank and the banking house WH Ladenburg & Sons under the railway entrepreneur Herrmann Bachstein , which operated the railway on December 8, 1897 with effect from April 1, 1897 together with the Bregtal Railway and the Zell-Todtnauer -Eisenbahn in the Süddeutsche Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (SEG).

The Breisacherstrasse train inverted to the destruction of Breisacherstrasse railway bridge over the Rhine 1945 Breisach from there further to the French Colmar .

In the 1970s, the German Federal Railroad considered closing the Breisacher Bahn due to alleged inefficiency, but this did not happen.

Under the project name "Breisgau-S-Bahn 2005" a new transport concept was developed on the Breisacher Bahn and the eastern Kaiserstuhlbahn . Both rail lines have been expanded, the stations modernized and the timetable significantly expanded. On the Breisacher Bahn the Breisgau-S-Bahn GmbH took over the operation of the Deutsche Bahn AG in 1997 . Since May 2000, SWEG trains have been running on the eastern Kaiserstuhlbahn between Gottenheim and Bahlingen every half hour, and on to Endingen every hour.

On March 7, 2016 at around 4 p.m., the train driver of the Breisgau S-Bahn arriving from Freiburg prevented a collision with the SWEG train from Endingen, which was on track 3, because the switches at Gottenheim station were incorrectly set at that time.

Reception building

In 2007 the community of Gottenheim bought the station building from Deutsche Bahn. In 2010 it was sold to a Gottenheim investor who extensively renovated the building and largely retained the historical features from the early days of the station. The Gerome’s Canadian Coffee Lounge restaurant was set up on the ground floor .

Track systems

Gottenheim station has three platform tracks on a house platform and an island platform. Since December 2019, access to the central platform on tracks 2 and 3 has been via an underpass. The barrier-secured track crossing over tracks 1 and 2 was removed as part of the renovation in 2019. Track 1 usually serves the BSB trains to Breisach , track 2 the BSB trains to Freiburg and track 3 the SWEG trains to Bahlingen - Riegel - Endingen .

Rail transport

The Breisgau-S-Bahn , the regional train service in the Freiburg area, connects Gottenheim every half hour on the Breisacher Bahn with Freiburg Breisach and on the Kaiserstuhlbahn with some Kaiserstuhl communities (to Bahlingen also every half hour).

Bus transport

There is a bus stop at Gottenheim train station, via which public transport on the street is connected to Gottenheim train station.

The Gottenheim train station is also an ideal starting point for bike tours around the Kaiserstuhl and Tuniberg .

future

In the cooperation agreement between RVG and Nahverkehrsgesellschaft Baden-Württemberg (NVBW) of March 11, 2009, the further expansion of the Breisacher Bahn and the Kaiserstuhlbahn is planned. The electrification of both lines and the barrier-free expansion of the stations were planned by 2018. In Gottenheim, the trains coming from Freiburg in the direction of Breisach and Endingen will be winged, creating more connections without changing trains. In addition, there is a temporary 15-minute interval between Gottenheim and Freiburg. On January 31, 2019, the occupied train station, in which only the cafe is now, and the mechanical signal box were closed. The reconstruction work on the route should last until the end of 2019.
