The Emden – Emden Außenhafen railway connects the Emden main station with the Emden harbor . It is a single-track branch line that has been electrified since June 2006 . In order to reach the route, all trains coming from Leer have to change direction in the main station .

The route was initially operated by local trains, which also carried through cars from the Ruhr area and from Bremen. The through car transfer took place in the Emden Hbf station. Until the line was electrified, the trains were carried by class 212, 290, 260 diesel locomotives or the Köf at Emdens main station.

An intercity train pair from Leipzig and back to Berlin - Cottbus and the Emsland Express ( RE 15 ) from and to Münster , one or two intercity trains from Koblenz and the Ruhr area and a regional express at lunchtime run daily with the Borkum ferry to Oldenburg . The IC are free of charge in both directions from Bremen or Leer. The timetable varies from season to season.
