Location and structure

The current station building is part of the Nordseepassage , a large shopping arcade in the center of Wilhelmshaven, which was built on the former site of the old train station and the central bus station . The entire building complex with the train station was inaugurated in September 1997. Rail travelers get from the two platforms directly under the protective roof of the North Sea Passage and can reach the central bus station (ZOB), which is also adjacent to the North Sea Passage, with dry feet. Access to the platforms is possible through a night entrance between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. The former station building was demolished and the freight transport facilities removed.

The Wilhelmshaven train station is the end of the line from Oldenburg . There are three regular routes from Wilhelmshaven. The first connection ( course book route 392) leads as RE 18 via Sande , Oldenburg and Cloppenburg to Osnabrück . A second connection (course book route 393) also runs as the RB59 to Sande and from there, branching off at an acute angle, leads over the East Frisian Coast Railway via Jever and Wittmund to the East Frisian town of Esens . The NordWestBahn November 5, 2000 introduces both connections every hour with modern diesel railcars of type LINT out. Earlier long-distance passenger rail connections via Oldenburg to Bremen (and partly to Lindau or Dresden via Hanover and Magdeburg ) no longer existed when the NordWestBahn took over operations. As a replacement, there has been a direct connection Wilhelmshaven – Oldenburg – Bremen twice a day (2019: four times) (timetable route 392/390, RE19) since February 2003.

From October 2011 to January 2013, the Wilhelmshaven – Oldenburg railway line was expanded to connect to the JadeWeserPort in Wilhelmshaven. During the construction work, the route between Sande and Rastede was closed to passenger traffic. A rail replacement service was offered.

The lines in the Wilhelmshaven area are not yet electrified . The electrification for freight traffic from JadeWeserPort via Sande to Oldenburg is under construction. With the completion of this project, the start of a two-hour connection to Hanover without changing trains is planned.

Bus transport

The city's central bus station, which is the junction of public transport, is located at the train station. Today (2019) this is done by six inner-city bus routes operated by Stadtwerke-Verkehrsgesellschaft Wilhelmshaven . The inner-city operation takes place in the rush hour every 20 minutes, after 9 p.m. every half hour. Other regional bus routes lead to Aurich , Jever , Varel , Schillig and Sande ( Weser-Ems Bus , Fass Reisen , Bruns-Reisen) and Wiesmoor (Fass Reisen). The tariff of the Ems-Jade transport association applies .

The city is also the starting point for three long-distance bus routes that connect Wilhelmshaven with the capital Berlin , the Hanseatic city of Hamburg and Bremerhaven , among others .
