Haffkrug is a village in the municipality of Scharbeutz in Schleswig-Holstein with 1,811 inhabitants (as of November 2018).

history

Haffkrug has existed for more than 600 years. A jug gave him his name. This can be seen in a document from 1388, in which the "kroghe by dem have" is mentioned, which means "Krug" or "at the harbor". The Knoop family's renowned Elisabethbad later stood on this historical site. The suggestion for this bath, in which bathing carts - changing rooms on wheels were set up, may have come from the then royal seat of Eutin . With the summer season of 1813 the "bathing operation" began. Today the PRO Foundation's senior citizens' holiday home is located there . Another senior citizens' residence with 63 apartments is currently being built on the premises of the holiday home.

Economy and Transport

Haffkrug is located in the western Lübeck Bay and can be reached by car via the federal motorway 1 . The Haffkrug station of the same name is located on the western edge of the village on the Lübeck-Puttgarden railway line , which is to be relocated around 300 m further west as part of the hinterland connection to the fixed Fehmarnbelt crossing . Haffkrug has had the title of a spa since 1813 and has been a sea spa since 1970. Haffkrug has been part of Scharbeutz since January 1974 . It extends almost two kilometers on the Baltic Sea beach .

Excursions by ship are offered from the pier, e.g. B. to Lübeck - Travemünde or towards Grömitz . In summer, festivals such as the “Eel Week” are celebrated on the open-air stage at the Kurparkhaus. There are some hotels and restaurants as well as various beach shops. Haffkrug came into public interest after plans became known to deeply redesign the naturally grown coastal landscape in order to build a yacht harbor. This project is still the subject of controversy.

Directly at exit 15 (Haffkrug / Eutin ) of the A1 there is a cemetery of honor for the dead of the Cap Arcona and Thielbek disaster , where victims of the sinking of the Cap Arcona and Thielbek are buried.
