Theodor Staub

Theodor Staub (born August 26, 1864 , † February 7, 1960 in Zurich ) was a Swiss teacher for the blind.

Life

The son of a silk manufacturer went blind at the age of seven and learned Braille at the age of fifteen . He completed an apprenticeship in straw and cloth weaving as well as wood turning. From 1884 he attended natural science and humanities lectures at the University of Zurich and at the Polytechnic . From 1893 to 1912 he was a teacher for Braille and natural history at the Institute for the Blind and Deaf in Zurich. In 1904 he founded the Swiss Blind Lending Library , in 1907 the Swiss Museum of the Blind and in 1911 the Swiss Association of the Blind , which he chaired until 1919. In 1948 he was awarded an honorary doctorate in medicine from the University of Zurich .
