Prince Gustav Albrecht zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg , full name Gustav Albrecht Alfred Franz Friedrich Otto Emil Ernst Prince zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg (born February 28, 1907 in Berleburg , † 1944 in the Soviet Union , officially declared dead November 29, 1969 ) was the head of the family of the former princely house of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg .

Life and family

Gustav-Albrecht zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg was born as Prince zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg. He was the eldest son from the marriage of Richard zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg (1882-1925) and Madeleine zu Löwenstein-Wertheim-Freudenberg (1885-1976). Brother Ludwig Ferdinand died on November 22, 1943 at the age of 33 near Tschernjachiw (Tschernjechoff) in the fighting for the Ukrainian city of Zhytomyr, together with other leaders of his regiment. His younger brother Christian Heinrich (1908-1983) was adopted by Prince August zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Hohenstein (1868-1948) in 1927 to prevent the Sayn-Wittgenstein-Hohenstein line from going out.

He attended the high school for boys and girls in Berleburg and from Easter 1922 the convent school in Roßleben , Thuringia , where he passed the school- leaving exam in spring 1925. He was a member of the Corps Suevia Tübingen .

Hereditary Prince Gustav Albrecht took over the inheritance of his father at the age of 18 as head of the House of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg, after he was killed in a traffic accident near Hanau .

His last position in the German Wehrmacht was Rittmeister of the Reserve and Ic staff officer of the 23rd Panzer Division . He has been missing from Orsha in Russia since June 24, 1944 . On August 18, 1944, he was posthumously awarded the German Cross in Silver . In 1969 he was officially declared dead. His will is apparently still having an effect on the grandchildren's generation after a son of his younger brother Ludwig Ferdinand considered himself entitled to challenge his last will in court. However, the AG Bad Berleburg (Az. 2 LW 3/17) rejected this authorization. With a decision of July 23, 2020, the Hamm Higher Regional Court confirmed the first-instance decision and made it legally binding.

Marriage and offspring

Gustav Albrecht married the Swedish Countess Margareta Fouché d'Otrante on January 26, 1934 . The following children emerged from the marriage with Margareta:
