Third General Staff Officer
The Third General Staff Officer, or Ic, was responsible for the hostile situation and military intelligence in the higher staffs of the Prussian - German Army and the Wehrmacht . For this purpose, the Third General Staff Officer was in charge of the enemy intelligence department , which tried to investigate the military situation by educating and questioning prisoners of war . To counter espionage he was often assigned a group of secret field police . Successful completion of the war academy was a prerequisite for employment as a general staff officer . The third orderly officer , usually with the rank of first lieutenant , was placed at the side of the IC as assistant and deputy .
In the Bundeswehr , the "G 2" corresponds to the third general staff officer.
