Sandhamn is a village ( småort ) on the island of Sandön in the municipality of Värmdö in Uppland . It is located in the eastern part of the Stockholm archipelago .

The location of the place, quite far out on the open sea, has made this place a popular place to stay for summer guests and sailors. Sandhamn is a center for the summer activities of the Kungliga Svenska Segelsällskapet (KSSS) ( German  Royal Swedish Sailing Society ) and thus a classic starting point for various sailing regattas , including the Gotland Runt and the Sandhamnsregattan . There are also good bathing opportunities in Trouville and Fläskberget .

Sandhamn is served by the Waxholmsbolaget passenger line, among others . The ships operate from Stockholm, Vaxholm and Stavsnäs . There are several hotels and restaurants in the village, of which the 17th century Sandhamns Värdshus is the best known. Sandhamn's sailing hotel with its sailing restaurant and diving center are popular meeting places.

history

Sandhamn was first mentioned in the Middle Ages . At that time still under the name Swea Sandhö .

At the beginning, Sandhamn was used as pasture for the farmers on the neighboring island of Eknö . The sheltered harbor in Sandhamn was used as an anchorage for large sailing ships in the 16th century. They waited there for the lull in summer, the storms in autumn or the thick ice in winter. Sandhamns harbor was also the place where the fleet of Gustav I. Wasa was waiting to join the battle against Christian II. To begin.

Around 1670, customs discovered the island's strategic location and opened a customs post. With the establishment of the customs post, the place began to develop more and more. In 1710 a so-called Sternschanze with an artillery battery was built in the village . The fortress lasted for a long time, but began to deteriorate more and more in the period after the First World War . During the Russian devastation in 1719, the entire place was burned to the ground, but within a few years the residents had rebuilt it.

From 1726 a shipping route for foreign ships was opened at Sandhamn and the activities of the customs increased. In 1752 the previous building became too small for Customs and a larger one began to be built. The building was built according to plans by the palace architect Carl Hårleman . To make room for the new customs post, some buildings were demolished. Some of these were rebuilt elsewhere. Sandhamns Värdshus is one of these buildings .

There used to be intensive pilotage work on Sandhamn . At the beginning this came from the neighboring island of Eknö, but around the mid-1880s it moved to the town. With the customs station and the pilot base, the place developed more and more. In 1880 there were around 300 residents. Steam shipping became common at the end of the 19th century. With this development an early form of tourism also got going. The Swedish writer August Strindberg spent several summers on the island.

In 1897, the Royal Swedish Sailing Society (KSSS) built their clubhouse in Sandhamn. With this, more and more amateur sailors came to the place. The building was designed by Fredrik Lilljekvist and is now used as a hotel and conference building. Sandhamn became more and more of a sailing metropolis. In 1939, Sandhamn was the destination of the Gotland Runt sailing regatta . From 1963, both start and finish were in Sandhamn.
