Life

Carl Posner was the son of Louis Posner (1815–1868), a Berlin doctor and editor of medical publications. Carl Posner studied natural sciences and medicine in Berlin, Bonn, Leipzig and Strasbourg. In 1875 he received his doctorate as Dr. phil. filed in Leipzig. Between 1878 and 1880 he was an assistant at the Pathological Institute in Giessen and again received his doctorate in medicine in 1880 (also in Giessen). He then settled in Berlin as a general practitioner and received specialist urological training as an assistant to Ernst Fürstenheim .

In 1889 he completed his habilitation in internal medicine and in 1890 he began teaching at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin as a private lecturer . Eventually he became a full-time professor for internal medicine and in 1902 a secret medical councilor .

His most important scientific works include the introduction of testicular biopsy and the detection of a physiological protein concentration in the urine. Later he devoted himself increasingly to sexual medicine , also in the service of education. Numerous scientific publications have appeared from his clinic with the assistance of his assistants.

From 1889 to 1921 Posner headed the specialist journal Berliner Klinische Wochenschrift . He was also co-editor of the magazine for urology .

Posner was a devoted friend of Rudolf Virchow and had written a biographical study ( Rudolf Virchow ) on him.
