Ikologi Prasini ( Greek Οικολόγοι Πράσινοι , German  ecologists / Greens ) describes a Greek party that represents the principles of ecological politics . It was founded in December 2002 and is a member of the European Green Party .

She has been Deputy Environment Minister in the Tsipras government since 2015 and is represented in the Greek Parliament by two members elected via the SYRIZA list .

Political principles

The principles of Ikologi Prasini, as set out in their statutes: sustainable , social justice , non-violence and direct participatory democracy , respect for diversity , decentralization and subsidiarity , protection and restoration of natural ecosystems , quality of life , personal and social responsibility and equality before the law .

Its founding declaration defines ecology as creative, innovative, independent, tolerant, internationalist, pacifist, self-governing, participatory, feminist, solidarity, consumer protection, anti-authoritarian and alternative.

organization

As a party, the Ikologi Prasini are organized decentrally in local political movements that have formed at the municipal, prefecture and regional level . The central political body, the Panhellenic Council, is elected two-thirds by regional conferences and one-third by the Greek national congress. All organs of the party can be voted out and have an even number of members in order to achieve the greatest possible consensus. The central executive body is a six-member executive secretariat under the political control of the Panhellenic Council; there are no positions like president or general secretary. All members have the right to participate in the national congress; Extraordinary congresses and votes are held for important decisions.

Party organ

The press organ of Ikologi Prasini is the magazine Πράσινη Πολιτική (pronounced "Prasini Politiki", German translation "Green Politics"). Originally an organ of the Green Politics party , it was transferred to it with the founding of Ikologi Prasini. Since the 62nd edition (April 2008) it has been published with 16 pages a month in 10,000 copies.

Founding history

Following a call by Michalis Tremopoulos and M. Koulouroudis and an initiative of the Thessaloniki Eco-Movement, the “Ecological Forum” was set up in 2002 to bring together members of the Greens who were already members of the European Federation of Green Parties, members of various local environments - To bring movements and independent environmentalists to the same table for the development of the ecological sector.

On 7./8. December 2002 the Ecological Forum convened a national conference in the building of the Athens Bar Association , which decided to found the Ikologi Prasini and elected an 18-member Panhellenic Council to coordinate the establishment of a new political party. In the months to come, working groups were set up to develop statutes and the political principles that the first party congress in May 2003 at the Pantion University of Athens then adopted.

Participation in elections

In the summer of 2003, it was decided to participate in the 2004 elections to the European Parliament ; in September 2003 it was decided not to participate in the next national elections.

2004 European elections

In the 2004 elections to the European Parliament, the Ikologi Prasini, led by Mikhail Tremopoulos, received 0.67% of the votes after an alleged proposal by Tremopoulos to erect a monument to Kemal Ataturk in Thessaloniki caused excitement during the election campaign.

Local elections 2006

In the local elections in 2006, Ikologi Prasini supported two independent green lists, the "Ecological Athens" in the municipality of Athens, which received 1.4% of the vote, the "Ecological Solidarity" list, which received 4.6% and 2 seats in the Prefectural Council in the prefecture of Thessaloniki, as well as 53 other municipal and prefectural electoral associations in the country.

Parliamentary elections 2007

At the 5th Ordinary Congress in Athens in March 2007 , detailed proposals for program changes and participation in the national elections were approved. As a result, opportunities for cooperation were explored through contact with movements and other parties, but at an extraordinary congress on June 30, the party decided to run independently.

In the Greek parliamentary elections on September 16, 2007 , the Ikologi Prasini ran across the country except in the prefectures of Dodekanisos and Florina with full lists in 42 regions and with a total of 254 candidates. Celebrities from the arts and sciences with the poet Nanos Valaoritis at the helm were publicly involved. They became the sixth largest political party with 1.05% of the vote, the largest without a seat in parliament.

In 2008 they presented themselves as a political alternative. Before the European elections in 2009 they achieved poll results of up to 6.2%.

European elections 2009 and 2014

The list of candidates for the 2009 European elections was approved by all members voting . Michalis Tremopoulos , Maria Vassilakou (Deputy Federal Spokeswoman for the Austrian Greens ), Nikos Chrysogelos (Chairman of the "Mediterranean SOS") and Kostas Diakos (environmental lawyer) were elected to the first four places on the list . With 3.49% of the vote, they achieved an election result that, although clearly lagging behind the survey results, earned them a seat in parliament for the first time in national elections.

In the 2014 European elections , the Greens won 0.9% of the vote and thus failed to get back into the European Parliament.

Parliamentary elections in 2009 and 2012

In the Greek parliamentary elections on October 4, 2009 , the ecologists / Greens failed with around 2.5% of the vote, just under the three percent threshold .

In the parliamentary elections in May 2012 , they were able to increase their result by 0.4 percentage points and received 2.93% of the vote. This made them the eighth strongest party, but just failed to pass the three percent threshold in the Greek parliament . In the parliamentary election that followed in June 2012 , it lost a lot and only came in at 0.88%.

General election 2015

The party did not participate directly in the parliamentary elections in January 2015 and September 2015 , but instead stood on SYRIZA's list. One candidate was elected to parliament in January and two candidates from Ikologi Prasini in September. The Ikologi Prasini member Giannis Tsironis was appointed Deputy Environment Minister in the Alexis Tsipras I and Alexis Tsipras II cabinets .
