The parliamentary election in Greece in September 2015 was an early election of the Greek parliament , which took place on September 20, 2015. The strongest party, with a turnout of 56.57%, was the left-wing party SYRIZA, led by Alexis Tsipras . This was followed by the conservative Nea Dimokratia by Vangelis Meimarakis and the neo-Nazi Chrysi Avgi (XA) by Nikolaos Michaloliakos as well as a social democratic alliance led by PASOK , which improved slightly from seventh to fourth place. The government coalition between SYRIZA and the right-wing populist Anexartiti Ellines (ANEL) that existed before the election was continued. The second Tsipras cabinet was sworn in three days after the election.

background

The Tsipras cabinet , which has been in power since the early elections to parliament in January 2015, lost its majority in parliament as a result of the reform program agreed with Greece's creditors, because members of the left wing of SYRIZA in particular did not support the reform program. In several votes on the government's austerity and reform course, up to a third of the Tsipras faction had refused to follow suit. The decisions were only made through votes of opposition MPs in parliament. On August 20, Tsipras announced his resignation as prime minister. Thereupon the President Prokopis Pavlopoulos commissioned the chairmen of the second and third largest party, Vangelis Meimarakis from the conservative Nea Dimokratia and subsequently Panagiotis Lafazanis from the newly founded left Laiki Enotita with the formation of a government coalition. According to the constitution, a transitional government with a new cabinet is planned in preparation for the elections. According to Article 37 of the Greek Constitution, it is administered by one of the three highest judges in the country. On August 27, 2015, Pavlopoulos appointed the President of the Areopagus Vasiliki Thanou-Christofilou as acting Prime Minister.

Electoral system

The parliamentary elections in Greece are held according to the "reinforced proportional representation system". A total of 300 MPs are elected; including 288 MPs in 56 electoral districts, which are combined into 13 larger electoral districts, and twelve MPs on a state list. In the allocation of seats, the strongest party receives an allowance of 50 seats, the remaining 250 seats are allocated proportionally. For the 56 electoral districts, the distribution of seats is first based on the Hagenbach-Bischoff procedure and the remaining seats are then allocated using the Hare-Niemeyer procedure . A 3 percent threshold clause has been in place for parties to move into parliament since 1993 . Every Greek citizen from the age of 18 is entitled to vote .

Parties

The Supreme Court approved 14 parties and five electoral alliances for parliamentary elections. At the beginning of September, KIDISO and LAOS , both of whom had missed their entry in the last election, announced that they would not run in the elections. At the end of August, the party leaders of PASOK and DIMAR declared the cooperation of both parties on a common list of candidates as Dimokratikí Symbarátaxi ( Greek Δημοκρατική Συμπαράταξη ).

The fact that no poll results came close to the later election results raised questions.
