To Potami ( Greek Το Ποτάμι , German: The river ) is a left-liberal Greek party .

The party was founded on March 11, 2014 by the TV presenter Stavros Theodorakis , with the claim to be a "movement by citizens for citizens", without political legacy and professional politicians.

Positions

Politically, it is assigned to the left-liberal spectrum. According to Theodorakis, the party program contains both left and neoliberal ideas.

The party takes a pro-European line and in the run-up to the parliamentary elections in January 2015 declared itself ready in principle to form a coalition with both possible election winners, both with the conservative Nea Dimokratia and the left-wing alliance SYRIZA . According to Theodorakis, the prerequisite for a coalition government with Syriza is that Syriza does not call Greece's pro-European course into question through excessive demands. However, Syriza categorically ruled out cooperation with Potami in the run-up to the parliamentary elections in January 2015 by Syriza chairman Alexis Tsipras , as the party, according to Tsipras, is not pursuing a course compatible with Syriza.

In economic policy, Potami et al. a. for the establishment of funds and mechanisms as alternative forms of financing for small and medium-sized companies that should collect the money on the market and lend it to companies without the intermediary of banks or invest it directly in them. In addition, small companies should be able to flexibly exchange liquidity reserves with one another using certain mechanisms. Infrastructure projects should also be financed through public-private partnership models. According to Potami, Greece has untapped growth potential, particularly in the agricultural sector, raw material exports and tourism, which could be directly tapped. Potami also advocates a strict separation of church and state.

Participation in elections

To Potami first appeared in the 2014 European elections . Theodorakis himself did not run because he intended to run in the next national parliamentary elections.

A few weeks after its founding, the party was in opinion polls with over eight percent in third place behind the left-wing party SYRIZA and the government-leading Nea Dimokratia . It also ran in the early parliamentary elections on January 25, 2015 and was fourth-strongest party with around six percent of the vote, just behind the party of the Greek right-wing extremists. The party was open to coalition talks with the election winner SYRIZA .

In the summer of 2017, Stavros Theodorakis , founder and chairman of the party, decided to join the new Kinima Allagis party. To Potami resigned from Kinima Allagis on July 1, 2018.

In the European elections in May 2019 , Potami clearly missed the 3% threshold with 1.52%. She did not run for the parliamentary election in Greece in 2019 .
