General election in Greece 1946

The parliamentary elections in Greece in 1946 took place on March 31, 1946. It was won by the conservative and predominantly royalist electoral alliance Inomeni Parataxis Ethnikofronon (United Camp of the Nationally Minded ) with an absolute majority of the votes of 55.12% and 206 of 354 seats in the Greek parliament .

The electoral boycott of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) was one of the decisive factors for the extent of the victory . According to observations by foreign election observers, 9 to 20% of voters abstained from voting. The outcome of the election led to a government led by the largest conservative-royalist party, the People's Party ( Laiko Komma ). Its chairman, Konstantinos Tsaldaris , became prime minister .

Parallel to the election on March 31, 1946, the so-called "third round" of the Greek civil war began with the attack of the communist-controlled insurgents against the police station of Litochoro south of Mount Olympus on March 30, 1946.

The parliamentary election took place according to simple proportional representation . The election was carried out under compulsory voting . Men and women over the age of 18 were eligible to vote for the right to vote.

The election results were particularly questioned by the Communist Party. An indication of possible manipulation is, for example, the fact that official information on the number of persons entitled to vote was missing. The unofficial information on this number fluctuated between 1,850,000 and 2,211,791 eligible voters.
