The Laiki Enotita ( LAE ; Greek Λαϊκή Ενότητα , ΛA.Ε., German national unit ) is a split from the socialist Greek ruling party SYRIZA , which was founded on August 21, 2015 . It arose out of protest against their austerity policies and favors an exit from the euro zone and a return to the drachma .

When it was founded, it comprised 25 members of the Greek Parliament . The former Greek energy minister Panagiotis Lafazanis was named as chairman of the party and the parliamentary group . It also includes the two former Vice-Ministers Dimitris Stratoulis and Konstantinos Isychos , who were also dismissed by Tsipras during the cabinet reshuffle in July 2015. On August 31st, President Zoi Konstantopoulou announced at a press conference that she would run for Laiki Enotita in the new parliamentary elections on September 20th.

The Laiki Enotita was the third largest force in parliament until the general election in Greece in September 2015 . With 2.86%, it narrowly missed the threshold clause for entry into parliament. In the parliamentary election in July 2019, it only received 0.28%.

The party name is inspired by the Unidad Popular , the Chilean electoral alliance led by Salvador Allende .
