Vasiliki Thanou-Christofilou ( Greek Βασιλική Θάνου-Χριστοφίλου , * 1950 in Chalkida ) is a Greek lawyer . She is President of the Supreme Court of Justice in Areopagus and headed a transitional government as Greek Prime Minister from August 27, 2015 until the parliamentary elections on September 20 .

Life

Vasiliki Thanou studied law at the University of Athens . She completed postgraduate studies in European law at the University of Paris II (Sorbonne). In 1975 she entered the judiciary. In 1992 she was promoted to chairperson of a court of first instance, in 1996 to the appellate court, in 2005 to its president and in 2008 to judge on Areopagus. In 2014 she became its vice-president and on July 1, 2015, the first female president of the Supreme Court. Thanou-Christofilou teaches civil law at the National Judges School. She was a long-time union member and president of the Greek Union of Judges and Prosecutors.

After Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras announced his resignation on August 20, 2015 and a new government with a majority capacity could not be formed within parliament, the state president dissolved parliament and appointed one of the presidents of the three highest courts ( Areopagus , Council of State and Court of Auditors) as Prime Minister of a transitional government until the following parliamentary election in September 2015. Thanou-Christofilou was sworn in on August 27, 2015. She was the first female prime minister of Greece.

Thanou-Christofilou is married and has three children.
