Michalis Tremopoulos ( Greek Μιχάλης Τρεμόπουλος , also Michail Tremopoulos , born March 3, 1958 in Serres ) is a Greek publicist and politician. He was in the 2009 European elections as the first and only deputy of the Ecologists / Greens in the European Parliament voted and belonged to the Group of the European Green Party to. On February 1, 2012, he handed over his mandate to Nikos Chrysogelos .

Life

Tremopoulos grew up in Thessaloniki and studied law at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and social economy at Goddard College in Vermont / USA.

Since 1981 he has worked as a journalist for various press agencies, including the newspapers “Thessaloniki” and “Macedonia” , for radio and television stations. He mainly dealt with topics of environmental protection , consumer protection , human rights and Balkan politics. He also gave courses in journalism and ecology.

Political career

Tremopoulos has been involved in the environmental movement in Greece since 1975. He was chairman of the Association for the Quality of Life (1978 to 1982) and 1982 founding member of the Thessaloniki ecological movement.

In 1998 he was elected to the Departmental Council of Thessaloniki for Ecology Solidarity on the Synaspismos list.

Tremopoulos was involved in numerous citizens' initiatives, movements and organizations in Greece and internationally for environmental protection, the defense of cultural heritage, peace and social solidarity, and human and civil rights.

With an appeal, Tremopoulos and others took the initiative in 2002 to form the so-called Ecological Forum , which brought members of various green groups and local environmental movements to a common table and initiated the foundation of the Ecologists / Greens party . Tremopoulos was a member of this party's 18-member Panhellenic Council and was its top candidate in the 2004 and 2009 European elections . In the 2009 European elections , the party received 3.49% of the vote and won a seat in the European Parliament , which Tremopoulos was the only Greek Green MP to occupy.
