Thodoros Skylakakis ( Greek Θόδωρος Σκυλακάκης , born October 18, 1959 in Athens ) is a Greek politician and has been chairman of the liberal-conservative Drasi party since July 2013 . He was a member of the European Parliament from 2009 to 2014 .

Life

Thodoros Skylakakis studied economics at the University of Athens from 1978 to 1981 and then specialized until 1982 with an MBA in marketing from City University London and a diploma in market research from the British Market Research Society .

From 1985 he worked in the communications sector, where he founded two companies. He was also politically active for the conservative party Nea Dimokratia (ND): In 1989 he was an advisor to the Greek Defense Minister Ioannis Varvitsiotis , and from 1990 to 1993 he was the Greek Prime Minister Konstantinos Mitsotakis . He was also responsible for political planning in the election campaign committee of the ND in the Greek parliamentary elections in 1989, 1990 and 1993. From 1994 to 1999 he headed the E31 research center. In 1995 he also published a book about the dispute over the name of Macedonia .

From 1999 to 2000 Skylakakis was general secretary of the small liberal party O Phileleftheros . In 2003 he was elected to the city council of Athens, where he was also the city's deputy mayor responsible for financial matters until 2006. From 2003 to 2004 he was also responsible for the preparation and implementation of the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens . In 2006 he took up a position in the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he was responsible for international economic relations and development cooperation. He was also the special envoy on climate change and chairman of the inter-ministerial committee for the protection of intellectual property.

In the European elections in Greece in 2009 Skylakakis was elected for the ND in the European Parliament , where he joined the Group of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats) like the other ND members . He also became a member of the Committee on Budgetary Control and the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety .

In 2010, in the wake of the Greek financial crisis , there was a conflict between Skylakakis and ND after the latter refused to support the austerity measures introduced by the Greek government under Giorgos Papandreou ( PASOK ). Together with other party members, Skylakakis left the ND and joined the newly founded party Dimokratiki Symmachia . In May 2011 he also left the EPP group in the European Parliament to join the liberal ALDE group. In November 2012 he joined the Drasi party , of which he became chairman in July 2013.

Skylakakis is married and has two daughters.
