Ioannis Varvitsiotis ( Greek Ιωάννης Βαρβιτσιώτης , * 2. August 1933 in Athens ) is a Greek politician of Nea Dimokratia , lawyer, longtime parliamentarians and from 2004 until 2009 Member of the European Parliament .
Varvitsiotis studied law at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens . After graduating from university, he continued his education in Germany and specialized in international law .
For many years he worked with Konstantin Karamanlis , the leader of the Greek Conservatives. In 1961 he entered the Greek Parliament for the first time and was re-elected several times, from 1974 to 2000 for the Nea Dimokratia.
He held a number of government functions as Deputy Minister of the Interior and Foreign Affairs (1974–1975), Minister of Commerce (1975–1977), Minister of Education and Religion (1977–1980), Minister of Justice (1992) and twice Minister of Defense ( 1989, 1990-1993).
In 2004 he was elected to the European Parliament for the sixth term. He belonged to the Christian Democrats group of the European People's Party and was a member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs and an alternate member of the Committee on Culture and Education . He stayed in the European Parliament until 2009 and was not available for re-election.
