Miltiadis Evert ( Greek Μιλτιάδης Έβερτ , * May 12, 1939 in Athens ; † February 9, 2011 ibid) was a Greek politician . From 1987 to 1989 he was mayor of the Greek capital Athens and from 1993 to 1997 party chairman of the conservative Nea Dimokratia (ND).

Career

Evert comes from a Bavarian family named Ebert who came to Greece in the 19th century under the Wittelsbach King Otto , who also came from Bavaria . By transcribing the name from the Latin into the Greek alphabet (the Latin "B" is pronounced as "V" in Greek), the name changed from Ebert to Evert. Angelos Evert , the father of Miltiadis Evert, was police chief of Athens, even during the National Socialist occupation and was later honored as Righteous Among the Nations for his rescue of Jews .

Evert studied economics at the University of Athens . Before entering politics, he held various management positions in Greek industry. He worked as a financial advisor to Handelsbank Emporiki Bank and administrative director of the Elefsina shipyard . After the military coup on April 21, 1967 , he was banned from traveling.

After the end of the dictatorship, Evert was a founding member of the conservative Nea Dimokratia in 1974 and was elected to the Greek parliament in the same year. In September 1976 Prime Minister Konstantinos Karamanlis appointed him to his cabinet as Minister of Economic Affairs.

From January 1, 1987 to May 3, 1989 he was Mayor of Athens. In this role he made it possible, among other things, to set up the radio station Athena 98.4 FM , the country's first private radio station.

After the heavy electoral defeat of Nea Dimokratia in the parliamentary elections in 1993 and the subsequent resignation of Konstantinos Mitsotakis , Evert was elected as the new party chairman. When the ND lost the parliamentary elections again in 1996, he resigned from office in March 1997.

Miltiadis Evert died at the age of 71 in Ippokratio Hospital in Athens.
