history

  • In 1907 the Commercial Bank of Greece (CBG) was founded.
  • 1922 The Commercial Bank of the Near East (CBNE) opened in London, with CBG as the main shareholder.
  • 1925 CBNE opened in Alexandria and Cairo .
  • 1959 CBG becomes the main shareholder of Piraeus Bank , which was founded in 1916.
  • 1965 CBG opens the Greek commercial bank in Frankfurt am Main . This will later be renamed Commercial Bank of Greece (Germany) .
  • 1990 CBNE is renamed Commercial Bank, London .

After the opening of the Iron Curtain, Emporiki Bank invested in Southeastern Europe and opened subsidiaries in Albania, Bulgaria and Romania. The subsidiary in Frankfurt with only one office was closed in 2005. In 2011, Emporiki Bank was taken over by the major French bank Crédit Agricole , which acquired 95% of the shares. On October 27, 2011, Emporiki Bank was delisted on the Athens Stock Exchange .

All branches of Emporiki Bank in Albania, Bulgaria and Romania were transferred to the parent company Crédit Agricole a year later.

Without the companies in the growth markets, limited to the Greek and Cypriot markets, the Emporiki Bank fell into crisis . The bank with 376 branches at the end of the day had accumulated a loss of 5.7 billion euros. The Crédit Agricole sold Emporiki Bank to Alpha Bank for a symbolic price of one euro .
