The Holstenau is a border river between Holstein and Dithmarschen and the districts of Steinburg and Dithmarschen . It is first mentioned in a document in 1568.
With the construction of the Kiel Canal from 1887 to 1895, Holstenau was divided into several parts. The first part is east of the canal and begins in the northwest of Holstenniendorf . It is severely straightened. The following part west of the canal, which has only been slightly straightened, begins north of Hochdonn and east of Eggstedt . The next part, again running east of the canal, begins west-southwest of Gribbohm . To the north of Abebtissinwisch , it flowed into Wilsterau , which was also cut through by the Kiel Canal ; today it flows into the moor canal there . Between the remaining parts there are stretches on which the former meandering river bed of the Holstenau was completely replaced by the Kiel Canal.
The Holstenau is not to be confused with the Holstengraben , which further south to the Elbe formed the border between Holstein and Dithmarschen.
