The Wilsterau (also Wilster Au ) is a northwestern (right) tributary of the Stör in the Steinburg district or in the Wilstermarsch .

course

With the construction of the Kiel Canal from 1887 to 1895, the Wilsterau was cut off from its natural headwaters, which lay west of the canal near Burg (Dithmarschen) . It begins today east of the canal, to which it is connected via a pumping station, and runs from there in a south-easterly direction, makes an arc in a south-westerly direction, and then reaches Rumfleth and Wilster . The Wilsterau originally ran through Wilster in a loop, but it was shortened with a puncture . Near Kasenort, it flows into the Stör at river kilometer 63.5. Today's course is about 19 kilometers long.

Water balance

Since the construction of the Kiel Canal, the Wilsterau no longer has a natural spring. It is also only connected to the Holstenau , one of its earlier tributaries, via the Moorkanal and the pumping station on the Kiel Canal. It therefore no longer has any relevant natural inflows, but is primarily fed via pumping stations . Their catchment area today only covers approx. 3,500 hectares. Since the construction of the Kiel Canal verschlickt it by the lack of natural flow rate increasing and thus the lack of flushing action.

Fish fauna

The Wilsterau is managed by ASV "Petri Heil" Wilster eV. The water has a large population of pikeperch and perch , among the white fish dominate bream and alande , which migrate to spawn from sturgeon and Kiel Canal in the water lily fields and herbaceous areas of the tidal river and can reach huge weights there. The river is one of the best coarse fish waters in northern Germany.
