The Abuja National Stadium is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the Nigerian capital Abuja in the Federal Capital Territory .

history

The Nigerian government signed the contract for the construction of the stadium and the adjoining "Games Village" on July 18, 2000. The facility was built on the occasion of the VIII Africa Games , which took place in Abuja in October 2003. Many see the ultra-modern sports facility, which can hold 60,491 spectators, as one of the city's architectural landmarks. It is the venue for the Nigerian national soccer team , the so-called Super Eagles , and only offers seats for the fans. It also serves as a venue for numerous other social, cultural and religious events.

Construction work

The architecture of the Abuja National Stadium comes from the Stuttgart- based company Schlaich Bergermann & Partner , which was also responsible for the construction supervision and the complete planning work for the construction of the stadium. The company Julius Berger Nigeria plc was responsible for building the stadium complex . responsible, which belongs to the German construction company Bilfinger Berger . The Games Village was carried out by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation.

Other use

The spectator capacity also enables the stadium to be used for concerts and religious conferences, which are sometimes even preferred to sports. Since Nigeria is a very religious country - the inhabitants belong almost equally to Islam and Christianity - some religious events take place every year, which demand an arena that can seat many spectators. An example is the decision of the Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo , who had a religious event held in September 2006, even though the Nigerian Football Association had actually scheduled a football game against Rwanda.

Although many Nigerians are skeptical about using the stadium for such major events, the stadium management has so far stuck to its strategy. One reason for this is that this is the only way to cover the high operating and maintenance costs of the complex.
