The Stade de Franceville is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the Gabonese city of Franceville . It is the third largest stadium in the African country after the Stade d'Angondjé and the Stade Omar Bongo . The facility is also known under the name Stade de la Rénovation . During the African Cup of Nations in 2012 and 2017 , six group stage games and one quarter-finals were played in Franceville.

history

The venue, which had 10,000 seats at the time, was built in 2005 and was converted for the 2012 African Football Championship and now has a capacity of 25,000 spectators. It is the last stadium of the total of four venues for the 2012 African Cup of Nations, which was completed and opened five days before the start of the tournament. The venue should be ready in August 2011, but there were delays. On the evening of January 16, 2012, the Gabonese national football team received Sudan for the opening game. The game ended in a goalless draw.

The current stadium was designed by the Serbian architecture firm Studio Romb. The sports facility is covered by a two-part roof structure over the main and opposite stands. Rainwater is collected over the roof and used to water the lawn. The Serbian specialist company Amiga Kraljevo was responsible for the construction of the stadium roof. The stadium as well as the seats and parts of the roof structure are in Gabon's national colors of blue, yellow and green. A video display board sits enthroned on the edge of the grandstand of a back gate and the four masts of the floodlight system provide lighting for evening games.
