The Stade Modibo Keïta ( German  Modibo-Keïta Stadium ) is a football stadium with an athletics facility in Bamako , the capital of Mali . It is named after Modibo Keïta , the country's former president (1960–1968). The arena, with a capacity of 35,000, is mainly used for football matches, is the home of AS Real Bamako and occasionally sees international matches for the Mali national team .

Stadium complex

There is a floodlight system and a 400 m tartan track in the stadium. This includes a gymnastics hall and a hall for basketball , volleyball and handball , which can also be used for cinema screenings. There are also tennis courts, an Olympic-size swimming pool and several training and exercise facilities.

Considerable funds have been spent on expanding the facilities since 2009.

Football African Cup of Nations 2002

The stadium was the venue for seven matches of the 2002 African Cup of Nations . Initially, five of six games of the preliminary round group D took place here, followed by a quarter-final and a semi-final.

Senegal , Egypt , Tunisia and Zambia made up group D. The games met with varying levels of audience interest. While only 3,000 visitors saw the game between Egypt and Tunisia on January 25th, there were twice as many on January 21st when Zambia played against Tunisia and 20,000 when neighboring Senegal played against Egypt on January 20th, as many as on January 20th January 26th in the game Senegal against Zambia. 10,000 spectators watched the game between Egypt and Zambia on January 31st.

In the quarter-finals, the stadium was sold out with 25,000 spectators watching Congo's defeat by Senegal. Three days later, Senegal returned to the semi-finals, beating Nigeria 2-1 in added time in front of 20,000.

Mass panic February 2011

On February 21, 2011, on the occasion of a service for Mawlid an Nabi festival to celebrate the birthday of the Prophet Mohammed, a mass panic broke out, resulting in at least three dozen deaths and twice as many injured. In the crowded stadium, after a sermon by a well-known imam, many people were crushed to death at a barricade when leaving the site.
