action

After his mother Julia died of a heroin overdose , 17-year-old Joshua "J" Cody was forced to move to Melbourne to live with his grandmother Janine "Smurf" Cody, the matriarch of a family whose life is organized crime . Her three sons, the Cody Boys, live with her . Their eldest son is Andrew "Pope" Cody, who is hiding from a group of renegade police officers after a series of robberies. The middle brother is Craig, an unpredictable yet successful drug dealer. And their youngest is Darren, who gives in to the guidance of his brothers.

One day Joshua's uncle Craig takes him on a drive. If he stops at traffic lights, he is insulted by the driver of the neighboring vehicle. Craig gives Joshua a gun and they both follow the driver and his accomplices into an alley, where he parks his car, gets out and provokes a fight between him and Craig. Instead, Craig tells Joshua to get out of the vehicle and scare it off with his gun.

A little later, Barry "Baz" Brown and Andrew meet in the mall. There, Barry reveals to Andrew that he wants to stop the raids and settle down with his family. He hopes Andrew will join him. But he hesitates. When Barry then leaves the place, he is approached by the police. He admits that he has just come from Andrew, whereupon he is shot by the police. This leads to the situation between the police and the family escalating. They swear revenge and convince Joshua to steal a car and park it on a street. He complies with this request. He does not know that his uncles will attract some police officers with the car. As they approach, Andrew, Craig and Darren shoot them.

The next day Joshua, Andrew, and Darren are arrested. Joshua meets Officer Nathan Leckie, the head of the robbery department. He is interested in his special situation with his family and tries to relieve him of it. While all three are later released, Craig is on the run and tries to hide in a friend's house. However, he realizes that he was being followed by the police the whole time. He tries to escape, but the police catch him doing it and kill him.

Meanwhile, Joshua was arrested by Officer Leckie for illicit alcohol use. He takes him to an hour hotel and offers him to get out of the family and switch to a witness protection program . But Joshua refuses. Meanwhile, his lover Nicky is murdered by Andrew because Darren mistakenly believed that she was talking to the police. Both are eventually arrested when Andrew tries to murder Joshua.

Janine learns of the arrests, the two murders, and the fact that Joshua could testify against his own family as a key witness. She is not convinced of his loyalty and decides that for this reason he must be eliminated. Through her connections, she learns the address at which her grandson is housed as part of the witness protection program, and has some corrupt police officers sent out to murder him. But when Joshua sees the policemen in front of the house, he runs to Janine and says that he doesn't want to go on living like this. He really wants to help get Andrew and Darren out of jail. To do this, he sits down with the family lawyer to create a statement that will lead to both of them being acquitted in the process. When this happens, Leckie meets with Joshua and asks him if he is satisfied and has found his place in the world.

After they are both released, Joshua returns to Janine's house with a request to stay and rest. She asks him in and Joshua goes to greet Andrew and Darren, and immediately afterwards he goes to rest in a room. Andrew is happy, goes to his room and is about to start talking to him when Joshua kills him wordlessly with a headshot. Joshua returns to the living room and hugs his grandmother, who is just as shocked as Darren.
