The 1957 Africa Cup ( English : African Cup of Nations , French : Coupe d'Afrique des Nations ) was the first game of the African continental football championship and took place in Sudan from February 10 to 16 . Organized by the African continental football federation Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF), only three teams - Egypt , Ethiopia and Sudan - took part. The originally announced South Africa was excluded from the tournament due to the refusal to compete with a multi-ethnic team , so that only two games took place.
Both games were played in the Stade Municipal in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum .
Egypt won the tournament and became the first ever African football champions.
