1930 in Uruguay
Peru took part in the first World Cup in Uruguay in 1930. In the preliminary round, the team met Uruguay and Romania . The first World Cup game against Romania was lost 3-1, with Luis Souza scoring the first World Cup goal for Peru to make it 1-1. The Peruvians were already behind in the first minute and lost in the 70th minute to Plácido Galindo by being sent off for the first time in World Cup history. Against hosts Uruguay, they pulled out of the affair with 0: 1 and said goodbye to the World Cup for 40 years. With the tournament, the tenure of coach Francisco Bru ended and there were no more international matches for four and a half years.
1934 in Italy
Peru initially registered for the first World Cup in Europe, but then did not play the qualifying matches against Brazil, so the Brazilians were qualified without a fight.
1938 in France
Even four years later, the Peruvians, who had still participated in the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin , did not take part.
1950 in Brazil
For the first World Cup in Brazil, Peru should qualify in a group with Ecuador, Paraguay and Uruguay. Since Peru and Ecuador withdrew, Paraguay and Uruguay qualified without a fight.
1954 in Switzerland
Four years later, like several other teams, the Peruvians registered too late and were not admitted.
1958 in Sweden
For the 1958 FIFA World Cup wanted to participate, at the now eight South American teams, is Peru had against Brazil qualify . On April 14, 1957, the Peruvians' first World Cup qualifier took place in Lima , which ended 1: 1. In the second leg a week later in Rio de Janeiro they lost 1-0 and were eliminated.
1962 in Chile
Four years later, Peru had to play against Colombia in qualifying for the World Cup in Chile and lost their first game in Bogotá 0-1. A week later it was only enough to draw 1-1 in Lima , which meant that the final round was missed again.
1966 in England
For the World Cup in England , in addition to defending champion Brazil, who was automatically qualified, all other nine CONMEBOL members wanted to qualify for the first time . The qualification for the three starting positions was carried out in three groups of three and Paraguay met Uruguay and Venezuela . Peru could only win the games against Venezuela, but lost both games to Uruguay, which also won both games against Venezuela. Peru was eliminated as second in the group.
1970 in Mexico
Four years later, the Peruvians were able to qualify in sports for the first time. In a group of three with Argentina and Bolivia , Peru, which was trained by the former Brazilian world champion Didi , surprisingly prevailed. They won a World Cup qualifier for the first time on August 3, 1969 (1-0 against Argentina).
In Mexico, they faced Bulgaria in their first game and won 3-2 after they were 2-0 down. In the second game against the newcomer to the World Cup, Morocco , they managed a smooth 3-0, so that in the last group game against Germany it was all about winning the group, as the Germans had also won both games before. The winner was allowed to play in the quarter-finals in Leon, the loser is threatened with a game against tournament favorite Brazil, in the event of a draw would have been drawn. But the Germans didn't give in to that, but quickly took a 3-0 lead thanks to a “flawless” hat-trick by Gerd Müller . Teófilo Cubillas managed to score 3-1 with a deflected free kick one minute before half-time, but in the second half the attackers of both teams failed again and again at the opposing goalkeepers or missed the goal, so that neither team scored a goal . In the quarterfinals, Peru met their neighbors Brazil and lost 4-2. With five goals Teófilo Cubillas was the third top scorer. After the World Cup, the tenure of coach Didi, who only coached club teams in the following period, ended.
1974 in the Federal Republic of Germany
In qualifying for the World Cup in Germany , Peru should face Chile and Venezuela. Venezuela withdrew, however, so that only the games against Chile were necessary. Both won their home game 2-0, so a play-off was necessary. Peru lost 2-1 in Montevideo . Chile then had to play in the "Intercontinental Play-Offs Europe - South America" against the USSR. However, the latter refused to compete in the Estadio Nacional de Chile after a 0-0 draw in Moscow , as several thousand opposition members had been detained, tortured and murdered there during the coup in Chile . The USSR was therefore disqualified and Chile took part in the World Cup in Germany.
1978 in Argentina
The qualification for the World Cup in Argentina was played in two rounds. Peru prevailed against Chile and Ecuador in the first round and together with Brazil against Bolivia in the second round.
In Argentina, the Peruvians met Scotland as South American champions in their first group game and won 3-1 after being 0-1 behind. In the second game against vice world champions Netherlands they fought 0-0. In the last game against newcomer Iran they won 4-1, with Teófilo Cubillas alone scoring three goals, two of which came from penalties. This made Peru the first time group winners and qualified for the second final round. In this again four teams competed against each other. Peru's opponents in this round were Brazil , Poland and hosts Argentina . Against the record world champions, the Peruvians lost their first game with 0: 3, against the third place in the World Cup Poland followed a 0: 1 and against Argentina, which had to win by four goals difference, a 0: 6. As a result, Peru was eliminated as the bottom of the group and Argentina reached the final due to the better goal difference compared to the Brazilians, in which they won against the Netherlands and thus became world champions for the first time. Peruvian players - especially Brazil - have been accused of allowing Argentina to buy them. The World Cup also meant the end of the 5th term of office of coach Marcos Calderón , who briefly took over the office again in 1980.
1982 in Spain
Four years later, Peru was able to qualify for the last time . For the World Cup in Spain they had to compete in a group with Uruguay and Colombia . Peru did not lose a game and won against Uruguay for the first time in Montevideo .
In Spain they met World Cup newcomer Cameroon in their first game and did not get past a 0-0 draw. The second game against eventual world champions Italy also ended in a draw (1-1). In the last game against the eventual third Poland they kept the 0-0 up to the 55th minute and then went down with 1: 5. This was the only game in the group that didn't end in a draw. Peru dropped out as the bottom of the group and thus said goodbye to the World Cup for at least 36 years. Italy only reached the second final round because of one more goal scored in front of the undefeated Cameroonians and then became world champions for the third time. Record goal scorer Teófilo Cubillas ended his national team career after the World Cup. For coach Tim , who had participated in the 1938 World Cup with Brazil 44 years earlier, the coaching career ended when the World Cup ended. Two years later he died in his homeland.
1986 in Mexico
Four years later, the South Americans were again entitled to four starting positions at the second World Cup in Mexico. The qualification was carried out over three rounds, whereby the three group winners of the first round qualified directly. Four other teams played from fourth place on the grid. Peru was one of these after only finishing second in the group with Argentina, Colombia and Venezuela. In the second round they met Chile. After a 2: 4 away game, the second leg was also lost 0: 1, with which Chile reached the third round and failed there against Paraguay.
1990 in Italy
For the second World Cup in Italy , Peru was drawn into a qualifying group with Uruguay and Bolivia . Peru lost all four games and was eliminated from the bottom of the group.
1994 in the United States
For the World Cup in the USA , Peru was drawn into a qualifying group with Argentina, Colombia and Paraguay . Surprisingly, the Colombians qualified as group winners ahead of Argentina, which, however, also qualified as group runner-up in the intercontinental playoffs against Australia. Peru only got a point with a 2-2 draw against Paraguay and lost all other games, so that only the last place was occupied again.
1998 in France
For the soccer World Cup 1998 , all South American teams except defending champion Brazil, who was automatically qualified, competed in a joint group for the first time and played four places in the everyone-against-everyone mode. Peru missed the finals in fifth behind the Chileans with the same points due to the worse goal difference.
2002 in Japan and South Korea
In qualifying for the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea, all 10 South American teams competed again in a common group and played in an all-against-all mode. Peru missed the World Cup by a clear margin as eighth.
In the end, 14 points were missing for direct qualification and 11 to at least reach the intercontinental playoffs.
2006 in Germany
The Peruvians were again unable to qualify for the 2006 World Cup in Germany . This time they even finished 9th behind Venezuela due to the direct comparison, as both were equal on points and goals.
2010 in South Africa
The qualification for the Soccer World Cup 2010 in South Africa was even worse: Peru only finished last in the group of ten and could only win three games, each 1-0.
2014 in Brazil
In the South American qualification for the second World Cup in neighboring Brazil , things went a little better, but as group seventh Peru could not qualify this time either.
2018 in Russia
In the qualification all 10 CONMEBOL members competed against each other in home and away matches. The best four teams qualified directly, the fifth had to play against a member of another confederation in playoff games. Peru, which finished third at the Copa America 2015 under Ricardo Gareca , who has been in office since February 2015 , started with a home defeat against Colombia and an away defeat against South American champions Chile, then won against Paraguay and was after the defeat in the last game of the year 2015 in Brazil only in penultimate place. 2016 did not go any better. Out of eight games, only two were won, two ended in a draw and the Peruvians lost four times. A 2-0 defeat against Bolivia was converted into a 3-0 win because the Bolivians had used an ineligible player. After a win and a draw in the spring of 2017, the Peruvians were in seventh place before the last four games, five points behind a direct qualification place. At the end of the qualifying round one was fifth in the table, which corrected for participation in the playoff games against the representative from Oceania New Zealand. After a 0-0 first leg, Peru won 2-0 in the second leg, making them the last team to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. This means that Peru qualified again for the World Cup finals 36 years after the last participation.
In Russia, the Peruvians lost their first two games 0: 1 against Denmark and eventual world champions France and thus had no chance of reaching the round of 16. The 2-0 win against Australia in the last group game only had statistical value. But they were able to improve by three places in the all-time World Cup table.
