World Cup tournaments

1930 to 1962

Senegal was part of French West Africa until 1960 . The Fédération Sénégalaise de Football was founded in 1960, the year of independence, but was only accepted into FIFA in 1964. Therefore, Senegal could not take part in the first World Cup tournaments.

1966 in England

Senegal had registered for the first time for the World Cup in the "motherland of football" and should compete in the qualifying round against Morocco and Mali . But since the teams from Africa, Asia and Oceania were only allowed one place in the final round, all 15 African teams withdrew.

1970 in Mexico

For the first World Cup in Mexico, the Africans were awarded a direct starting place, for which eleven teams competed. Senegal had to face Morocco in the first round of qualification . On November 3, 1968, the Senegalese played their first World Cup game in Casablanca and lost 0: 1. In the home game they managed a 2: 1 win and since the away goals rule did not apply, there was a playoff in Las Palmas , which was 0: 2 was lost. Morocco was then able to qualify for the first time in the other games, which is the first time since 1934 that an African team was represented at the World Cup.

1974 in Germany

Senegal also met Morocco in the first round of qualifying for the World Cup in Germany. After a 0-0 win in Morocco, the home game was lost 2-1. Morocco also failed in the further qualification.

1978 in Argentina

In qualifying for the World Cup in Argentina , Senegal could not prevail against Togo in the first round . After a 0: 1 away defeat, it was only enough to a 1: 1 in the second leg. Togo failed in the second round to Guinea.

1982 in Spain

For the World Cup in Spain , the number of starting places was increased and the Africans were granted another. In the qualification , the Senegalese had to face Morocco again in the first round. After a 0: 1 at home, a 0: 0 was achieved in Morocco, but that was not enough. Morocco then failed in the last round to Cameroon, which qualified for the first time.

1986 in Mexico

In qualifying for the second World Cup in Mexico , the Senegalese had to face Angola in the first round . Both won their home games 1-0, so the penalty shoot-out had to decide, which Senegal lost 3-4. Angola then eliminated in the second round against Algeria .

1990 in Italy

For the qualification for the second World Cup in Italy , Senegal, who in 1989 had been at war with Mauritania was not reported.

1994 in the United States

The Senegalese took part again in the qualification for the World Cup in the USA , for which the Africans received another starting place. You should compete in a group against Gabon , Mozambique and Mauritania . Mauritania waived and with three wins and one defeat against the other two teams, Senegal won the group. In the next round, Morocco and Zambia were the opponents. With just one point, Senegal only finished last in the group. Zambia was missing this point in the end, so Morocco qualified for the World Cup.

1998 in France

The qualification for the second World Cup in France, for which the Africans were now even entitled to five starting positions, then went even worse. Already in the first round, Senegal was eliminated by Togo , as after a 1: 2 away defeat in the home game only a 1: 1 was achieved. In the second round, Togo failed as the bottom of a group of four.

2002 in Japan and South Korea

The qualification for the first World Cup in Asia was finally successful for the Senegalese. In the first round, the Benin were eliminated 1: 1 and 1: 0. In the second round, the eternal opponents Morocco , Egypt , Algeria and Namibia were eliminated. Senegal, who had been coached by Bruno Metsu since January 2001 , started with three draws before winning their first victory. After another victory they lost to Egypt, but won the last two games. In the end, Morocco tied on points, but the goal difference and direct comparison spoke for the Senegalese.

For the final round, Senegal was drawn into the group with defending champions France , Denmark and ex-world champions Uruguay . After a 1-0 win in the opening game against France, in which Papa Bouba Diop scored the first World Cup goal for the newcomer, they were outnumbered - Salif Diao had received the red card in the 80th minute - a 1-1 draw against Denmark. In the last group game against Uruguay, in which a total of 12 players received yellow cards , the Africans led 3-0 at halftime, but conceded three goals in the second half. Nevertheless, it was enough for second place behind Denmark, while the two ex-world champions were eliminated. Sweden was the opponent in the round of 16 and was already leading after 11 minutes. Record international Henri Camara managed to equalize for the Senegalese in the 37th minute. It stayed that way until the 90th minute. In the subsequent extra time, Camara scored the golden goal in the 104th minute . In the quarter-finals, the Africans faced Turkey , which had qualified again for the first time since 1954. After 90 goalless minutes it went into overtime again, in which the golden goal decided again, but this time to the detriment of the Senegalese. It was the last golden goal in a men's World Cup to date. The team said goodbye to the World Cup for 16 years. After a game in December, Bruno Metsu's engagement in Senegal also ended.

2006 in Germany

Senegal was again unable to qualify for the second World Cup in Germany . After a bye in the first round, in the second round they finished second in a group behind Togo , which qualified for the first time, and ahead of Zambia , the Republic of Congo , Mali and Liberia . The Senegalese had a better goal difference than the Togoers, but two points less, which they had left behind in the 2-2 draw against Togo.

2010 in South Africa

The qualification for the first World Cup in Africa was even worse. There was another bye for the first round, but in the second round Algeria had one point more in the end, although they had lost one more game, and the Gambier with equal points were also ahead of Senegal due to the better goal difference. Only the winless Liberians were behind them.

2014 in Brazil

The qualification for the second World Cup in Brazil also ended unsuccessfully. In the group stage, Uganda , Angola and Liberia were eliminated with three wins and three draws, but Ivory Coast was stronger in the playoffs of the group winners. After a 1: 3 in the away game, the 1: 1 in the home game was not enough to go to the World Cup.

2018 in Russia

In January 2015, Aliou Cissé , captain of the 2002 World Cup team, took over as national coach from Alain Giresse after Senegal had already been eliminated in the preliminary round of the 2015 African Cup of Nations. In qualifying , the team only had to intervene in the second round, which took place in November 2015. Opponent was Madagascar , which had eliminated the Central African Republic in the first round . After it was only enough to a 2: 2 in the away game, the home game could be won 3: 0. Senegal was thus in the third round, which began in October 2015 and lasted until November 2017. Opponents were Burkina Faso, Cape Verde and South Africa. On the penultimate matchday of the third round, the team had to play again against South Africa after the originally lost 2-1 match was not counted due to match manipulation by the Ghanaian referee. The game was won 2-0, which is the second time the team qualified for the World Cup finals.

The Senegalese started the final round with a 2-1 win against Poland , which was 19 places better in the FIFA world rankings before the World Cup . In the second game against Japan they took the lead twice, but in the end had to be satisfied with a 2-2 win. They were tied for point and goal difference with the Japanese before the last game against Colombia in second place, as they had received more yellow cards than the Japanese. To get into the knockout round, they needed a draw against Colombia or, if they lost, they had to hope for a bigger defeat for the Japanese against the Poles who were already hopeless. Both then lost 0-1, so that Colombia overtook both of them and became group winners. Since Japan and Senegal both received only one yellow card in their last game, the Japanese continued to have fewer yellow cards and thus moved into the second round of the last sixteen, while Senegal became the first team in World Cup history to be fair because of the fair -Play rating missed the knockout round.
