Bruno Metsu (born January 28, 1954 in Coudekerque-Village , † October 14, 2013 there ) was a French football player and coach. After his conversion to Islam , he changed his name to Abdulkarim .
Player career
As a youth, Metsu played for SC Hazebrouck and RSC Anderlecht . In 1973 he moved to the then French second division USL Dunkerque , for the 1974/75 season back to his training club SC Hazebrouck and in 1975 to US Valenciennes , for which he completed 119 first division games until 1979 . Further positions followed for two years at OSC Lille and OGC Nice . By 1983 Metsu had completed 209 first division appearances in which he scored 20 hits.
This was followed by short engagements at SCO Roubaix and AS Montferrand . From 1984 to 1987 he worked as a player, then until 1992 as a coach for AS Beauvais .
Coaching career
After five years as coach at AS Beauvais, Metsu initially remained active in French league football and worked for OSC Lille (1992/93), US Valenciennes (1993/94), CS Sedan (1995-1998) and ASOA Valence (1998/99).
From 2000 he coached the national teams of Senegal and the United Arab Emirates .
With Senegal he took part in the 2002 World Cup, defeated defending champions France 1-0 in the opening game and made it to the quarter-finals. There the team failed only in extra time against Turkey . It was Senegal's first participation in the World Cup.
At the end of September 2008, Metsu resigned as national coach of the United Arab Emirates due to continued unsuccessfulness. He had coached the team since 2006. From October 2008 to January 2011 he was the coach of the Qatar national team .
On July 12, 2012, he replaced Diego Maradona as coach of Al Wasl . He announced his retirement on 26 October 2012, after at a hospital stay in Dubai a Colorectal cancer was diagnosed.
Metsu died on 14 October 2013 at the age of 59 years in Coudekerque-Village in Nord to cancer .
