Lamine Diatta (born July 2, 1975 in Dakar ) is a former Senegalese football player . He mostly played as a right-back or center- back .

Club career

Diatta came to France with his family at an early age. At Toulouse FC , he took his first steps in professional football. In 1999 he moved to Olympique Marseille , but left the club after a few weeks and joined Stade Rennes , where he stayed for five years and quickly established himself as a regular. In 2004 he signed a two-year contract with the French series champion Olympique Lyon , but was often only second choice behind Anthony Réveillère . After two championship titles in 2005 and 2006, he moved again within France to AS Saint-Étienne before he went to Turkey to Beşiktaş Istanbul in 2007 . His engagement there lasted only a few months and he terminated his contract for “personal reasons”.

In March 2008 he signed a short-term contract with the English first division club Newcastle United until the end of the season. This was not extended after the end of the season.

National team

Diatta participated with the Senegalese national soccer team between 2002 and 2008 in four African championships in a row. The best result was the move into the final in 2002 , when Cameroon lost 3-2 on penalties. At the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea, the defender completed all five games over the full distance. Senegal only failed in the quarter-finals in extra time against Turkey and was the first African team since Cameroon in 1990 to reach the round of eight at a World Cup. After 71 games, he ended his career in the dress of the Teranga Lions in January 2008 .
