Aliou Cissé (born March 24, 1976 in Ziguinchor , Senegal ) is a former Senegalese football player who was mostly used in defensive midfield. He has been the coach of the Senegalese national team since March 2015 .
Club career
Cissé's professional career began at Lille OSC in Ligue 1 . There he was under contract from 1994 to 1997. This was followed by his move to CS Sedan . From 1998 to 2001 he played for Paris Saint-Germain . He then worked for one year at HSC Montpellier . In 2002 he joined the promoted team in the Premier League Birmingham City . Between 2004 and 2006 he ran for Portsmouth FC . From 2006 to 2008 he played again with CS Sedan. His last professional position until 2009 was Olympique Nîmes .
National team
Cissé took part with the Senegalese national soccer team in 2002 and 2004 in two African championships in a row. The best result was the move into the final in 2002 , in which Cameroon lost 3-2 on penalties. At the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea, he completed one game as team captain and was used in five games. Senegal only failed in the quarter-finals in extra time against Turkey and was the first African team since Cameroon in 1990 to reach the round of eight at a World Cup. Cissé made 33 international matches between 1999 and 2005.
Coaching career
Cissé was the interim coach of the Senegalese national team from February to April 2012 . Since March 2015 he has been the national coach again with a contract running until June 30, 2019.
