The article contains a detailed description of the Serb-Montenegrin national football team , according to the Yugoslav Wars , the successor of and independence of most republics Yugoslav national football team took previously for the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, the Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia and the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in World Cups was started. It took part in the World Cup finals twice as the "Federal Republic of Yugoslavia" and "Serbia & Montenegro". The successes of the Yugoslav team were therefore initially attributed to the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and then to Serbia and Montenegro by FIFA . After Montenegro split off from Serbia , the Serbian national soccer team became its successor. She first took part in 2010 and the successes of the Yugoslav and Serbian-Montenegrin national football teams are now attributed to Serbia.

1994 in the United States

Yugoslavia had registered for the qualification for the World Cup in the USA and was drawn into a group with Greece, Russia, Iceland, Hungary and Luxembourg. Due to the Yugoslav wars , however, UN sanctions were imposed on Yugoslavia and the team was suspended.

1998 in France

The Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, which now only consists of Serbia and Montenegro, was allowed to qualify for the second World Cup in France and was able to qualify. She met Spain , the Czech Republic , Slovakia , the Faroe Islands and Malta . On April 24, 1996 the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia met the Faroe Islands in their first World Cup qualifier and won 3-1. Six more wins, two draws and only one defeat in Spain followed. This put the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in second place behind Spain and had to go into the playoffs of the group runners-up against Hungary. The first game was won 7-1 in Hungary, the second ended 5-0.

In France, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia was drawn into a politically explosive group, because there they met the USA and Germany, who had blamed the Serbs for the problems in the former Yugoslavia, and Iran , which has been around since the overthrow of the Shah until today is in open conflict with the USA and, on the other hand, was more on the side of the Muslim Bosnians in the Yugoslav Wars. In the first World Cup game, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia was able to win 1-0 against Iran with a goal from Siniša Mihajlović . In the second game against Germany they looked like the winner after a 2-0 lead, but had to accept the 2-2 from Oliver Bierhoff after an own goal by Mihajlović . Some so-called German football fans behaved ingloriously, as the French policeman Daniel Nivel was ambushed and severely mistreated during the game , so that he suffered life-threatening injuries. In the third game against the USA, a goal scored in the third minute resulted in a 1-0 win. Thus, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia was behind the tied German team due to the fewer goals scored in the group runner-up. They met the Netherlands in the round of 16 and lost 2-1 with a goal in added time. Predrag Mijatović missed a possible decision in favor of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia when he shot a penalty kick against the crossbar in the 52nd minute. With this, the team said goodbye to the World Cup as the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

2002 in Japan and South Korea

In qualifying for the first World Cup in Asia , the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia had to compete against Russia , Slovenia , Switzerland , the Faroe Islands and Luxembourg again . With five wins, four draws and only one defeat against Russia, only the third place was occupied behind the Russians, who qualified as group winners directly for the finals, and the Slovenes, who managed to prevail against Romania in the playoffs of the group runners-up and to qualify for the finals for the first time.

2006 in Germany

In qualifying for the second World Cup in Germany , the team then went as Serbia & Montenegro and prevailed as group winners against Spain, which had to go through the playoff games of the runners-up group, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Belgium , Lithuania and San Marino . No game was lost, six were won and four ended in a draw.

In Germany, the team was drawn into a so-called death group with the Netherlands , Argentina and World Cup newcomer Ivory Coast . In the first game against the Dutch they pulled out of the affair with 0: 1, but against Argentina followed a 0: 6, in which Mateja Kežman also received the red card . It was the biggest World Cup defeat for Serbia & Montenegro and Yugoslavia. In the last game they lost after a 2-0 lead with 2: 3 against Ivory Coast, which won a World Cup game for the first time. Saša Ilić scored the last (World Cup) goal for Serbia and Montenegro. After receiving a yellow-red card for Albert Nađ, they were outnumbered for one half. Nađ was only brought on in the 16th minute and saw the yellow card a minute later . It was the last game of the joint team of Serbs and Montenegrins, because Montenegro had split from Serbia due to a referendum. Serbia was able to qualify for the World Cup four years later, Montenegro not yet.
