Rajko Mitic
Rajko Mitić (born November 19, 1922 in Dolac , Bela Palanka , Yugoslavia , † March 30, 2008 in Belgrade , Serbia ) was a Yugoslav football player and coach.
Mitić was used from 1945 to 1958 in 572 games for Red Star Belgrade , where he scored 262 goals. Before that he played for Belgrade SK . As a member of the Yugoslav national team , he won two Olympic silver medals at the 1948 and 1952 Games . His successes also include five championship titles and four cup wins.
However, Mitić also became known through a mishap against the host during the World Cup in Brazil in 1950 , when he suffered a head wound shortly before the game that had to be sewn and thus his team had to act outnumbered in the first minutes of the game. In total, he was used in 59 international matches, where he scored 32 goals.
After finishing his active career Mitić worked from 1967 to 1970 as national coach of Yugoslavia. It was during this period that they entered the final of the European Football Championship in 1968 . Today he is considered one of the greatest figures in Yugoslav and Serbian football.
In December 2014, at the general assembly of the Red Star Belgrade football club , it was decided that the Red Star Stadium , also known as Marakana , will in future be called Rajko Mitić Stadium .
