Ilija Petković , in Cyrillic Илија Петковић (born September 22, 1945 in Knin , † June 27, 2020 in Belgrade ), was a Yugoslav football player and Serbian football coach .
Career as a player
For his club club OFK Belgrade Petković played 500 first division games in 15 years. He was a 43-time Yugoslav national player (1968 to 1974) and took part in the 1974 World Cup in Germany for his country.
Career as a coach
Petković began his coaching career at his hometown club OFK Belgrade. He celebrated his first coaching success with Servette Geneva when he won the Swiss championship in 1994. Thereupon his other coaching stations led him u. a. to Greece and China. At the 1998 World Cup he was assistant to the then Yugoslav national coach Slobodan Santrač .
As the successor to the unsuccessful national coach Dejan Savićević , he took over the Serbian-Montenegrin national football team in July 2003 , which after a series of defeats, including against Azerbaijan, missed participation in the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea. Petković completely rebuilt the team, giving young players a chance, and formed a promising team around Mateja Kežman ( Atlético Madrid ), Zvonimir Vukić ( Portsmouth FC ) and Dejan Stanković ( Inter Milan ). From Petković's assumption of office, the team remained unbeaten in competitive games up to the 2006 World Cup , qualified for this with only one accepted goal , but was eliminated there with three defeats in three games.
In 2013 he was a coach at South Korean Gyeongnam FC . Petković died on June 27, 2020 in a Belgrade hospital as a result of a COVID-19 disease.
