Daniel Nivel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Daniel Nivel (born November 30, 1954 ) is a member of the French police force, Gendarmerie nationale , who was attacked by several German hooligans on June 21, 1998 while doing his service at the 1998 World Cup . When he was already defenseless on the ground, they continued to beat and kick him.

The then 43-year-old husband and father of two was then in a coma for six weeks.
Nivel still suffers from the consequences of the violence to this day. He is paralyzed on one side and in a wheelchair, blind in one eye and can only speak with difficulty. Six of the hooligans were later sentenced to prison terms, including ten years for attempted murder.

The robbery and the ensuing legal process

During the preliminary round match between Germany and Yugoslavia in Lens , a group of drunk German hooligans tried to pass a narrow alley that was cordoned off by three uniformed police officers, including Nivel. The hooligans attacked the three police officers and knocked Nivel to the ground; the other two policemen escaped.

Nivel lost his helmet from the first blow. Several hooligans stepped on the defenseless Nivel and hit him with a wooden shield and a metal rifle attachment. Video recordings were used as evidence in the later trial.

In 1999, the Essen regional court sentenced four of the attackers to prison terms of between three and a half and ten years. The trial of another offender who was a member of the Bones MC and arrested in France took place from May 9 to May 22, 2001 before the Cour d'Assises of Saint-Omer . He was sentenced to five years' imprisonment and a ten-year entry ban to France . Another perpetrator was sentenced to three years and four months in prison by the Bochum regional court in 2003 .

Two of the perpetrators later joined the Hells Angels .

Honors for Daniel Nivel

After the attack, Nivel was promoted to one rank , although permanently unfit for service : from Maréchal des logis-chef (for example Sergeant / Police Master ) to Adjutant ( Oberfeldwebel / Chief Police Officer ).

The Croatian coach Miroslav Blažević wore a kepi of the French gendarmerie out of respect during the World Cup .

On September 20, 1998, a well-attended benefit game for Daniel Nivel took place in the Kehler Rheinstadion , the proceeds of which went to his family.
