The Rheinstadion is an athletics and football stadium in Kehl . It is located in a recreation and leisure area in Kehl, a few meters from the banks of the Rhine . The main user is the soccer department of the Kehler FV . During the football summer break, the Rheinstadion is a regular test venue for many European first division clubs. Regional athletics events and national youth games also take place. The stadium was the venue for Daniel Nivel's benefit game .

History and use

The stadium was opened on August 1, 1965 with an opening game between Racing Strasbourg and VfB Stuttgart in front of 12,000 spectators. Since then it has been mainly used for the athletics and soccer department of the Kehler FV. In August 1994, SV Linx played their home game of the first round of the DFB Cup against FC Schalke 04 , which ended 2-1. On September 20, 1998, the benefit match for Daniel Nivel took place between two traditional teams from Germany and France. In May 2012, the South Baden Football Association held its association cup final between SV Linx and Offenburger FV , which Offenburg won 2-0, in the Rheinstadion. During the football summer breaks, first and second division teams from Germany and various European countries use the Rheinstadion as a venue for test matches. The most frequently represented were SC Freiburg (eight times) and Karlsruher SC (six times).

The international youth tournament "Alsace Spring Cup" has been held in the Rheinstadion every year at Whitsun since 2000 . The tournament is a project of the non-profit organization KOMM MIT and the Kehler FV. The multi-day tournament is designed for all age groups in European youth football. The stadium is the backup stadium for the SC Sand women's soccer team for women's Bundesliga matches that do not take place in the evening.

Redevelopment

In 2010 the main stand had to be renovated due to the advanced age of the stadium. In addition, due to changes in the Ordinance on Places of Assembly, further renovations of the standing grandstands were necessary. The concrete steps on the back straight and on both sides of the main stand were renewed and provided with breakwaters . In addition, barriers were installed for the guest area. In March 2013, the city of Kehl announced that the natural turf, which was laid out in 1964 and which has since shown serious defects, would not be completely renovated, but instead would be subjected to three years of intensive care. This should prevent a game loss of at least twelve months and save costs. In addition, the main playing field received drainage .

In 2015 the running tracks of the stadium were repaired and re-coated. In March 2017, the renovation was to be pushed ahead with the renovation of the north stand, which was marked by decay. The city council rejected this measure for the time being, despite the fact that the tender had already been issued for reasons of cost. As a result, both the north and the south curve had to be closed for safety reasons. In September 2017, the municipal council then voted with a narrow majority for the renovation of the north and south curve

During the first half of 2018, the renovation work on the north curve and parts of the clubhouse were completed. The renovation of the south curve and the remaining parts of the clubhouse should take place by 2020. The stadium would then be completely renovated and the full spectator capacity would be usable again.

Benefit game for Daniel Nivel

For the French police officer Daniel Nivel , who was seriously injured by German hooligans during the 1998 World Cup, a benefit match was held in the Rheinstadion on September 20, 1998 in front of 6,000 spectators. In addition to other former German and French players, Felix Magath , Horst Hrubesch , Dieter Müller and Rudi Völler also took part . The guests of honor included DFB President Egidius Braun , FIFA President Sepp Blatter and Fritz Walter . As the game was broadcast live on television in addition to donations and entrance fees, proceeds of 150,000 German marks could be won, which were donated to the Nivel family. The Rheinstadion was chosen as the venue because Kehl, as a border town between Germany and France, was viewed as a suitable venue.

Data and miscellaneous

The stadium can accommodate 12,000 spectators. 630 of these seats are covered. Another 300 seats are partially covered in a grandstand. In addition to the main playing field and the tartan track, the stadium grounds include two more grass pitches and an artificial turf pitch , which are equipped with floodlights . The clubhouse and the Kehler FV office, as well as the stadium restaurant, are located in an extension next to the main stand.
