Career
Player career
Sušić began his professional career in 1973 at FK Sarajevo and played 54 times in the former Yugoslav national football team in midfield between 1977 and 1990 , scoring 21 goals. Between 1982 and 1991 he played a total of nine years for the French club Paris Saint-Germain , with which he was once champion and cup winner. At PSG , Sušić proved himself to be a strong dribbling offensive player who had a very good finish on goal. With a total of 343 appearances and 85 goals, he was for a time the record player at Paris SG . Years after the end of his career at PSG, he was celebrated as a legend and enjoyed a high reputation, both among club members and fans of PSG, as well as the other clubs in the French Ligue 1 . In the years that followed, Sušić was chosen as the all-time PSG player. He finished his career in France in 1992 with Red Star Paris .
Coaching career
Two years after the end of his playing career, he began his coaching career at the French first division club AS Cannes . After two moderate seasons he moved to Turkey to the club İstanbulspor , where he stayed for two years. In the following years he was under contract with various Turkish first and second division teams until he received a contract on December 29, 2009 as coach of the selection of Bosnia and Herzegovina. With the Bosnian national team, he narrowly missed qualifying for the EM 2012 in the relegation round, which initially led to discussions about his further suitability as a coach. Nevertheless, he received a contract extension from the board of the NSBiH until July 2014 and led the national team through the qualifying round for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil . On May 7, 2014, he announced the squad of the national team for the 2014 World Cup. After some violent criticism of himself after his premature departure from the World Cup, Sušić indicated his resignation. In July 2014, however, his contract with the Football Association of Bosnia and Herzegovina was extended until the 2016 European Football Championship . One day after a 3-0 defeat in the European Championship qualification against Israel , he was finally sacked on November 17, 2014.
At the end of January 2017, Safet Sušić became head coach of Turkish first division club Aytemiz Alanyaspor . It was the sixth Turkish team in his coaching career. Safet Sušić trained Akhisarspor from June 2018 to September 2018 . Despite the short duration for Akhisarspor, Sušić won the Turkish Supercup with his team.
