Foundation of an association
The association was founded on April 8, 1970 by Yılmaz Atabarut, Orhan İlker and İrfan Başaran. After the amateur clubs Akhisar Güneşspor , Akhisar Gençlikspor and Akhisar Doğanspor had dissolved, Akhisarspor took over part of their club colors. The color green was adopted from Güneşspor, the color black from Gençlikspor and the color yellow from Doğanspor.
From the mid-1960s, on the directive of the Turkish Football Association and the Ministry of Sports, a nationwide campaign was started, according to which the establishment of a football club should be promoted in all smaller cities in Turkey. a. should also come about through the merger of smaller local associations. Following this nationwide trend, the club was founded, according to the club's own statements, when a group of football enthusiasts put up a poster in the city center calling for Akhisarspor to be founded .
Already in the first season after it was founded, the club secured the championship of Manisa Bölgesi Amatör Şampiyonasi (German: Regional Amateur Championship of the Province of Manisa ) and was thus allowed to enter the province in the Türkiye Amatör Şampiyonası (German: Amateur Championship of Turkey ). Here the team managed to get among the last 16 teams; she was then eliminated from Denizgücü.
Entry into professional football
After Turkish professional football had been reduced from three to just two professional leagues in the summer of 1980, the third highest professional football league, the 3rd Lig , now known as TFF 2nd Lig , was reintroduced in 1984 on the directive of then President Turgut Özal . In addition, it was announced that after certain requirements and conditions have been met, you can apply for participation in the league. In order to promote urban development, several city notables tried to meet the requirements. The football stadium was expanded to meet the requirements of the league. After the conditions were met, the Turkish Football Association confirmed participation. Akhisar Belediyespor took part in the 1984/85 season of the re-introduced 3rd Lig. Already for the first season, the 1984/85 season , the club fought head-to-head with provincial rivals Manisaspor for the championship and thus for promotion to the 2nd Futbol Ligi . Finally, the club awarded the championship to Manisaspor with a three-point deficit and became runner-up themselves.
Relegation to amateur football
After the first successful third division season, the club began mostly to place table positions in the middle and lower table segment. Only in the seasons 1990/91 and 1991/92 the seventh place in the table was reached twice. In the third division season 1993/94 , the team ended the season in 13th and last place in the table and had to relegate back to the amateur league after ten years.
Change of name to Akhisar Belediyespor and return to the 3rd division
After relegation to the amateur league in the summer of 1994, Akhisar's city council, which had previously supported the club, got involved in the management of the club and changed the club name to Akhisar Belediye Gençlik ve Spor Kulübü (German: Akhisar's youth and sports club ) ( short: Akhisar Belediyespor ) around. In the first season with this name, the championship of the amateur league and thus the return to the 3rd Futbol Ligi was achieved. After the rise, the club again occupied table places in the middle and lower table segment.
Systemic relegation to the TFF 3rd Lig
Since Turkish professional football was to undergo fundamental changes in the 2001/02 season, preparations for this change were made in the 2000/01 season. So far, professional football in Turkey has consisted of three leagues: the top division, the single-track Türkiye 1. Futbol Ligi , the second-rate five-track and two-tier Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi and the third-rate, eight-track Türkiye 3. Futbol Ligi . For the 2001/02 season, professional football was expanded to four professional leagues. While the Türkiye 1. Futbol Ligi remained unchanged, the Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi was now in the second highest division, the Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi Aategorisi (to German: 2. Football League Category A of Turkey ), and the third highest division , the Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi Bategorisi (to German: 2. Football League Category B of Turkey ), divided. The subordinate Türkiye 3rd Futbol Ligi was henceforth the fourth highest division, the TFF 3rd Lig . Those teams that only occupied a middle place in the table in the third division season 2000/01 were assigned to the newly created fourth-highest Turkish division, the 3rd league, for the coming season. Akhisar Belediyespor, which had finished the league in 8th place in the table, had to relegate to the 3rd Lig due to the system.
The Atilla Özcan era and promotion to the TFF 1st Lig
After the system-related relegation to the newly created TFF 3rd Lig, the club always occupied safe non-relegation places, but did not make it to play for promotion. In April 2005, the club hired head coach Atilla Özcan . This coach brought about the hoped-for turnaround. So the team played in the first season under Özcan, the fourth division season 2005/06 , with the promotion and missed this by the 4th place in the table. After the club had fallen short of expectations in the 2006/07 season with 13th place in the table, the 2007/08 season played again for promotion. At the end of the season, the club rose to the TFF 2nd Lig as runner-up after an eight-year absence.
In his first third division season after promotion, the team occupied a middle place in the table under Özcan. Already in the second third division season under Özcan, the 2009/10 season , the club played for promotion. After a head-to-head race with Güngören Belediyespor , the club was behind this runner-up in the 2nd Lig, but still secured direct promotion to the TFF 1st Lig , the second highest Turkish league, and thus secured the first participation in the Club history in this league.
After the promotion, Akhisar Belediyespor made a good start to the 2010/11 season . Contrary to the expectations of the trade press, the club remained on a non-relegation place until the 6th matchday. It was not until the 1: 2 home defeat against Orduspor on the 6th match day that the club slipped to the 17th and penultimate relegation place. On 10th place in the table, the team freed themselves from the relegation region with a 1-0 home win against their direct relegation opponent Giresunspor and spent the winter break in 13th place in the table. After the start of the second half of the season was well managed, the club slipped back into the relegation region after a 4-0 away defeat on the 23rd matchday against Orduspor. After this defeat, his contract was terminated by mutual agreement with the head coach Özcan.
The Hamzaoğlu era and promotion to the Süper Lig
After the departure of Özcan, the club signed the young head coach Hamza Hamzaoğlu . This season he had led the league rivals Denizlispor to the runner-up championship and then resigned from his position due to an unexpectedly bad start in the second half of the season. Under this coach, the team, already considered relegated, fought the rest of the season against relegation and surprisingly secured relegation on the last day.
After the first second division season in club history, the club signed several seasoned players who had their career highlights behind them, such as Ahmet Cebe , Kürşat Duymuş , Oğuz Dağlaroğlu , Şehmus Özer , Emrah Eren or formerly promising players who had previously been promising, for the 2011/12 season could achieve their career breakthrough like Merter Yüce , Uğur Demirok . With this largely newly composed team, the club played for promotion from the start of the season and stayed in second place in the table during the winter break. With a few setbacks, the team managed to play for promotion in the second half of the season. After the team had lost their second place in the table at the start of the second half of the season, it was regained on the 27th matchday, then given back and occupied again on the penultimate matchday. On the last day of the match, Hamzaoğlu's team defeated direct promotion rivals Çaykur Rizespor 2-1 and thus completely surprisingly secured the championship and thus the first promotion in the club's history to the Süper Lig , the highest Turkish league. As a result, Akhisar was after Akçaabat the second district town that achieved participation in the Süper Lig with a club. Akçaabat was represented by Akçaabat Sebatspor in the Süper Lig from 2003 to 2005 . Due to the simultaneous descent of Manisapor from the Süper Lig, Akhisar Belediyespor also became the only representative of the Manisa province in the Süper Lig.
For its first Süper Lig season in the club's history, the 2012/13 season , the specialist press gave the club little chance of staying up. The club started the season with the lowest budget of all top division clubs and strengthened itself again with players who either had their career highlights behind them or whose career breakthroughs have not yet materialized. So were u. a. Çağdaş Atan , Mehmet Yılmaz , Emin Aladağ , Evren Özyiğit , Kenan Özer , Ibrahima Sonko , Bruno Mezenga and Güray Vural signed up . Only Severin Brice Bikoko , the top scorer of the past second division season, was a popular player in the 2012 summer transfer period. With this team, the club slipped into the relegation region on the 7th matchday, was able to leave it in the meantime and ended the first half of the season according to the expectations of the Turkish press as bottom of the table. Nevertheless, Hamzaoğlu's team managed to keep a point gap of four points to the next non-relegation zone. During the winter break, the club signed Bilal Kısa and Theofanis Gekas , two players who had their career highlights behind them. These commitments turned out to be very successful in the second half of the season. Both games contributed significantly to the following upswing with their goals and their game design. The team gradually shortened the points deficit to the last non-relegation place and made it to 14th place in the table with the surprising 4-1 home win against Beşiktaş Istanbul . Two game days later, the club slipped to the 15th and top relegation place, but returned to the 14th place in the table on the penultimate game day. On the last day of the match, the team defeated direct relegation competitor Orduspor away in the decisive game for relegation with 0: 2 and thus surprisingly secured relegation in his first first division season.
After the surprising relegation, the club management extended the expired contract with Hamzaoğlu for another season. Even before the second first division season, the club were given little chance to stay in the league. Theofanis Gekas, who had made a significant contribution to staying up in the second half of the season with his 12 goals, left the team as one of the most important performers. As a replacement for Gekas, the club was able to sign the rather unknown Senegalese player Oumar Niasse and otherwise remained without any significant signings. Contrary to expectations, the team became one of the surprise teams of the season. On the first day of the match, the team took the lead with a 3-1 home win against Elazığspor and secured the first league table top in club history. In the first half of the season the club was almost always in the top half of the table, sometimes even in the top third of the table, and spent the winter break in 9th place in the table. The team maintained this trend in the second half of the season, secured relegation early on and ended the season in 10th place in the table. In addition, the club provided three players to the Turkish national team this season: Uğur Demirok , Bilal Kısa and Güray Vural . In the course of this successful season, Hamzaoğlu took over the position of assistant coach for the national team in addition to his work at Akhisar Belediyespor. Before the 33rd match day of the 2013/14 season, Hamzaoğlu said that he would not continue his coaching activity at Akhisar in the next season. After the national coach Terim had asked him to choose either the national team or Akhisar Belediyespor for the coming season, Hamzaoğlu decided to become an assistant coach in the national team and against Akhisar.
Modern times and the first titles
After the successful coach Hamzaoğlu left the club, the club sold its star Oumar Niasse to the Russian club Lokomotiv Moscow for a transfer fee of 5.5 million euros . With Mustafa Reşit Akçay , the club hired a coach who had made a name for himself and celebrated considerable success with modest means. After consultation with this coach, the club then signed a number of players, including a. Didier Zokora and Theofanis Gekas. Akçay had already worked successfully with Zokora in his previous station and made his influence felt in this transfer. With this new workforce, the team started the season very successfully and led the table for two match days. After one of the first four places in the table could always be occupied until about the middle of the first half of the season, the club began to slide down in the table until the winter break. After the club lost 4-0 at home to the relegation-threatened club on matchday 15 and were only three points away from a relegation zone, Akçay resigned from his position.
The resigned Akçay replaced the club with the former superstar Roberto Carlos . After the signing of Carlos, the club's management invested in several, mostly foreign, players. These signings brought about a turnaround. The team moved away through several victories, u. a. a 2-1 away win against Fenerbahçe Istanbul , from the relegation zones. The club secured relegation on matchday 32 and ended the season in 12th place in the table. Despite the relegation, the club management and Roberto Carlos could not agree on a collaboration for the next season, so the Brazilian left the club at the end of the season.
For the season 2015/16 was Cihat Arslan committed as head coach. The season ended in eighth place in the table, which was the club's best season in the first division at that time. This club record could be exceeded in the following season and one could show the seventh place. During the season, Arslan and the club split after two match days (with differences of opinion as the official reason). Initially, Tolunay took over Kafkas , who, however, had to go after 25 game days and a 15th place in the table. Okan Buruk took over for him and led the team to the best result in the club's history to date. The last seven games of the season could all be won.
In the 2017/18 season , the club was able to celebrate its first national title. In the final of the Turkish Cup they won 3-2 against Fenerbahçe Istanbul . With this success they qualified for the first time for the Europa League . In the group stage, the club will face FC Sevilla , Standard Liège and FK Krasnodar .
The Supercup 2018 could also be won 5-4 on penalties against Master Galatasaray Istanbul .
